The terms haven't been released yet, but apparently Edgar Maddison Welch has been offered a plea deal. I really don't understand this unless the terms of the deal are very harsh. I can't imagine a more open and shut case than this one. It would be an easy conviction.

Very misleading to describe him as "shooter" in the title.

Should I have called him "man holding a gun which was fired"?

Man holding a gun which he shot.

That assigns blame which might be too judgmental for the conspiracy snowflakes.

A trial might have the benefit of publicly exposing and discrediting the conspiracy theory. However, this person should not be treated differently or given any more attention than any other defendant in similar circumstances. Rule of law and all. So they will likely plead it out.

Why?

Because he didn't shoot at anyone, not even close.

He used his gun to break a lock and open a door.

He was deranged, but not like one of those actual shooters who go to a school and kill 30 kids. It is obvious that neither his actions nor his intentions have anything to do with that.

Didn't he shoot the weapon? So he's a shooter.

If he went into a school and killed 30 kids (or even 1), he'd be called a murderer since that kind of trumps shooter in importance.

I went and conducted my own investigation. The truth is that Comet Ping Pong has great pizza, courteous staff, and an excellent line up of punk rock music (although a little too late at night for an old guy like me).

Agree with most of this, except that their pizza has slipped in recent years. With all of the recent pressure, that may be understandable.

If he shot a gun in a public place, he's an "actual shooter." And I think it's clearly "deranged" for him to drive hundreds of miles with multiple weapons to investigate something that was a total crock of sh*t.

Yeah he shot the gun. It didn't injure anyone but he shot it.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. He's a first time offender as far as I know, and fortunately no one got hurt. And, as the article observes, the vast majority of federal criminal cases end in pleas, not trials.

I see. He "used" a gun, he didn't shoot it (except that he did), but if we called him the "user" people might get confused and think it was a drug case. So lets stick with shooter, since that is clear and semantically correct.

His defense is that he was protecting underage sex ring victims.

He could investigate the emails and depose the people involved . Could get messy .

When I was 12, I shot a weapon. In a public space (at a pole in a farm, and people were around, behind me). Does that make me a shooter?

There is a reason the media is not calling him that. He isn't, according to the most common uses of the term.

But feel free to use misleading terms...not sure what you win with it, but it's your right to free speech.

1. That isn't a legal defense. 2. What emails? You sound as deranged as the shooter.

YES YOU WERE the shooter of that gun, just like he is THE SHOOTER. Why are you so stuck on this? Seems stupid.

Yes, of course you were a shooter. Even if you are alone in a private space, if you are shooting you are a shooter. It is also appropriate to describe him as a gunman.
