So many great books already recommended.
The Phantom Tollbooth is one of the truly great books for this age, but it plays more whatever folks are calling the intellectual crowd of kids (geeks, nerds, etc.). For after Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Narnia, I would suggest checking out something in the Redwall Series by Brian Jacques. They get a bit repetitive, but the prose is beautiful and I loved them as a kid. Winkle in Time is also good here. Bridge to Teribithia. In the vein of Hoot, I would suggest anything by Jerry Spinelli. Maniac Magee, Wringer, and Star Girl get the attention, but he has several others. Maybe some historical fiction here. Summer of the Monkeys, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Number the Stars. Joan Lowery Nixon's orphan train series. I recently read "To Come and Go Like Magic" by Katie Pickard Fawcett. It is a YA novel, but I am not sure it would have an appeal to a boy at 12. Maybe. Beautifully written. |

"Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series
for a quick read, The Crossover and Booked. |
Definitely A Wrinkle in Time. The Hobbit would be a good choice because if he likes it he can read the Lord of the Wring series. |
| CHERUB - it's a Brittish spy series |
| Another vote for Cherub! My son really enjoyed the series. |
+1000 Also, Watership Down |

Wonderful middle grade books that might appeal to your son:
The Wednesday Wars and Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt. When You Reach Me and Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead. Soar by Joan Bauer. The Great Greene Heist and To Catch a Cheat by Varian Johnson. Ghost by Jason Reynolds. Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. |
| OP here. Thanks for the wonderful suggestions! Please keep them coming if you have another book to add! |
| I read several books by John R. Tunis that I enjoyed. I think I was around your DS's age. They are good for sports buffs, which I was/am. Perhaps a little old-fashioned, but he might enjoy a peek into a different era. |
