So many great books already recommended. The Phantom Tollbooth is one of the truly great books for this age, but it plays more whatever folks are calling the intellectual crowd of kids (geeks, nerds, etc.). For after Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Narnia, I would suggest checking out something in the Redwall Series by Brian Jacques. They get a bit repetitive, but the prose is beautiful and I loved them as a kid. Winkle in Time is also good here. Bridge to Teribithia. In the vein of Hoot, I would suggest anything by Jerry Spinelli. Maniac Magee, Wringer, and Star Girl get the attention, but he has several others. Maybe some historical fiction here. Summer of the Monkeys, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Number the Stars. Joan Lowery Nixon's orphan train series. I recently read "To Come and Go Like Magic" by Katie Pickard Fawcett. It is a YA novel, but I am not sure it would have an appeal to a boy at 12. Maybe. Beautifully written.
