Will they really be able to mail on the 3rd if they make the decisions on Monday? Does the central office review the decisions in some way before letters are sent?

I have no inside knowledge but on the face of it, assuming no central review, all they would have to do is put form letters into envelopes and put address labels on them. Seems like they could mail on Friday after a Monday decision meeting.

Seems like a basic check by the central office could be done in a day or two.

Interesting to see that the test happened on Dec 3rd, teachers recommended by Dec 9th and nothing until Jan 30 when they start reviewing. I believe they might have done some prefilteration so they can work only on small set of numbers in the committee. And the prefilteration might have taken 1 month (excluding winter holidays?)

We have no idea how long it takes for them to get scores back. Also, some students took test late. Then holidays. Plus they have to assemble the files. All of that before they could do any prescreening/filtering out.

But I agree that they probably only look at a smaller group of applications. How else could they decide in one day?

At one of the magnet meetings, the coordinator said that there were some applications that they could just see that were not competitive -- easy rejects, in other words. (My kid miscoded his scantron sheet for the math section and sadly will be in this pile for TP!) I bet they do them as a group and eliminate a large chunk pretty quickly. I think the ease of applying to both Eastern and TP will give each school a few easy cuts from the bottom of their pool.

He said there are some easy admit decisions, which probably go quickly but individually. And then there's the tougher pile where they have to discuss each kid in depth. Once they think they're done, they need to double check the demographics to make sure they've taken kids from a variety of areas, racial backgrounds, ages, experiences, etc. I don't envy them. But I want them to hurry up and decide so everything can get into the mail!

I imagine they have a way to get through the applications quickly. The magnet has been around for a long time. I bet that in addition to prescreening, they have prepared spreadsheets or some other way of quickly comparing the students. Doing it in a day seems feasible if they have used the time leading up to the day to sort the applicants.

They probably use a rubric like I use for college admissions. First, we usually quickly sort applicants into 3 categories: definitely NO, definitely YES, everyone else. This usually eliminates half the pile. Next you score applications against the rubric and rank. What takes the most time is deliberating with colleagues about applicants we don't all agree on.

Any more information about when the letters will be mailed?
