Mariah Carey's performance in Times Square

If you can't actually hear, it's a real problem. As another PP pointed out, there's a lag, so she's got to sing to the track, not what she hears over any PA. It's also really easy to get off key with the recording, and then you've got off vocals combined with the music track that the audience/viewers hear. Lionel Richie had a bit of that on ABC last night - heard his vocals off from the music track.

I think she's getting into acting. She was in a Hallmark Christmas movie that I saw recently.

I saw that movie too. She's actually done acting off an on for a while now. She starred in Glitter in 2001 and had a small role in the movie Precious in 2009. She played the main characters mother in The Butler that came out in 2013. Most recently she was in a couple episodes of the TV show Empire. There have been numerous other things but those are just some of the more known things that I could think off of the top of my head.

If she was lip syncing, then why did the vocals stop when she stopped singing? She is a truly talented singer but I wouldn't expect her best show at midnight on NYE.

For those who were wondering why she didn't sing to the music that your heard, it's because she doesn't hear on stage what you hear through your TV. Massive speakers are beaming the sound away from the stage, and the musicians can't hear it. That is why almost ALL professional singers use earpieces. They can't hear the music without them.

This actually makes a lot of sense. You can also clearly hear her saying they didn't do a sound check, which would have been where they caught hte problem with her ear piece.

She tried to sing live, and that's where it all went wrong. There is a reason people lip sync. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
My DH runs cable and utilities for one of the companies that did one the segments not in NYC.

She is nothing but an aging pop star who has run her own course.

She is overweight now, has lost the majority of her past good looks & honestly looks like she is trying much too hard to keep up her sex appeal.

Her sexy/skimpy clothes no longer work for her @the tender old age of 46.

Jennifer Lopez + Gwen Stefani can fortunately still pull it off since they both are still in their physical prime.

However Mariah's time has been up the past decade.

She and Madonna should retire.....

She has no business trotting onstage in a flesh colored bodysuit with her boobs hanging out. It's not like I'm criticizing a woman in an elegant gown. She was barely wearing any clothes at all. No class.

Someone needs to tell her that it's time to cover up her old lady pancake boobs. She looked ridiculous. She shouldn't be onstage without proper support. She needs underwire support, and she needs to cover up more now that she's aging. Other aging celebs with far better breasts realize that you need more support and coverage as you age and the twins start dropping. It's commonsense.

I'm not making excuses for her. But truly if you've never performed live with monitors, you really have no idea what you are talking about. If you can't hear yourself, it is impossible to sing along with the track. It's not like Karaoke. I had it happen to me playing piano at a church. The monitor stopped working and I couldn't hear anything. I might as well have been playing the air.

Plus, the timing is complete different. If her earpiece was out there is no way she would have been able to pull it off.

Everything you've written here is true. But for a performer of her caliber, this should be old hat. There's not a performer to who that hasn't happened. She should have stuck her finger in her ear to hear her notes and sang the hell out of it like her fans would expect, especially for a New Years show. She is so apathetic it sucks.
