Unreported Rape - 20 years later?

Anonymous
Unfortunately, I think your statute of limitations has run out. Check the law on that for the state you were in when it happened. I think now you're SOL. Sorry.

I agree that you're out of luck, since both civil and criminal statutes of limitations have expired. In some of these high-profile cases, the victims were able to go to court when the accused called them a liar--they sued for libel and truth is a defense. But in your case, I think you're better off letting it go, since there aren't really any venues for reporting it now.

What would you expect to gain from reporting it now? If he is as callous as you describe then certainly a 20 year accusation will not scare him. He knows the statute of limitations has long expired and Europe has much tighter privacy laws than the U.S. Just by publicizing the accusation might open you up for civil litigation.

In many states there is no statute of limitations on first degree sexual abuse or rape. Check your state laws. Your post made me go look up the laws for those charges in the state where I was sexually abused as a child. Now I'm thinking about filing charges.

Is it too late to do anything about a rape that occurred by my next door neighbor, a World Bank French employee at the time, from more than 20 years ago? I was drugged after a dinner party, and woke up semi-conscious to find he directing his wife to have her way with me. My husband was next door, oblivious as they were our "neighbors". The next day I reported it to my best friend, husband and wrote a long letter which I saved a xerox copy of to this day. It was a different time, and I knew the wife was doing as her husband wished, and they had a small child, therefore reporting it was out of the question. It still haunts me and I'm still angry. Thoughts?

Sorry that it happened to you - you should have informed your husband/preacher/police. with in 3 to 4 months period, again period. if you didn't want to take actions 20 years ago then I'm thinking you only want attention now. if it was not important enough to report back then it not important enough now. if it really bothers you seek treatment.

I like the German law - if you accuse someone of a crime and then decide not to pursue or proved it was all made-up You get the max sentence that the other person would have got if found guilty

was it rape rape ? In my Whoopie voice.

If you're over 50 and it happened 20 years ago, you would have to have been 30 but you say you were 25.

Why did you not tell your husband, why didn't you go to the hospital, why did you not call the police ?

You really just wanted to lump Trump into this story didn't you ? You suddenly remember ? Come on.

I agree, you need mental help.

You need some compassion (& a few more brain cells to run together).

The World Bank is full of weirdos. I walk by their building on Pennsylvania Ave. around lunchtime and you see short balding white guys coming out with their talk glamorous African girlfriend having loud arguments. Nothing surprises me with those folks. They have their own constitution and regulations, it's kind of like an embassy, so stuff like this is an internal matter.

I dated a woman from the World Bank once. NUTS!

Most rapes go unreported.

Even if a victim goes to the hospital and submits to a forensic examination, there are 100,000s rape kits that have never been processed:

You've obviously have never been the victim of sexual assault. So how do you explain how f'd up you are. You are the one who needs mental help, PP.

A rape that happened in a private residence is most definitely not a World Bank internal matter.
