Everyone tells me I need to go on cruises.

I used to go on the QEII out of Manhatten for a 48 hour cruise to no where. It was cheap ribald fun

OP, I finally took one because people have been saying for years it's a "must do". We did a Disney cruise. It was better than I expected, but not as good as people claim. I feel pretty been there, done that about it and wouldn't take another in the near future.

What's your point, op?

If you don't want to go on a cruise, then don't. But you seem to just be ranting here.

I have zero desire to go camping, but I won't start a new thread just to rail against camping.

On a positive note: we have tremendously enjoyed cruising with Disney.

I love when people come on here just to slam an OP for starting a topic that they replied to. We bitch about everything on DCUM. That is what we do. Don't come here and tell us what is and is not an acceptable topic in your personal opinion.

Wait until you are 60+ and don't want to plan, and don't want to haul luggage from location to location. There is an age for everything.

Ok but what if most of the people you knew were up you ass about camping and how it's the best and basically you are dumb for not going camping even though you were severely allergic to campfires?

Then you might want to rant.

Only if I'm over getting motionsick! And since I'm 41 I don't think it's going to happen.

We hated going on a cruise because we felt completely claustrophic and didn't feel like we got enough time to do what we wanted to do in any of the ports where we stopped. I much prefer having a car, driving around while on vacation, and not having to adhere to a rigid schedule (If the boat is leaving at 3 and you have to be back, that's a pretty rigid schedule).
Also, did not enjoy having so many people on top of each other all the time.
We're trying to figure out if it's possible to see Alaska without taking a cruise -- that's how much we dislike cruising.

I was sucked in by the thought of driving to Norfolk, VA and getting on a boat, and not wasting a whole day getting somewhere, coming home, not having jet lag, and not having to drag stuff around from place to place. In theory it sounds great, but now I feel like I'm willing to put up with the aggravation of getting somewhere in order to have the freedom when I get there.

I see no reason for you to go, OP, especially if you get seasick. Sounds miserable! While I did do a semester on a boat, and enjoyed it, it was more a means of travel/study abroad, not a true cruise.

I don't really 'get' cruises in general (though admittedly I have not gone on one). To me, it's just a standard resort experience that just happens to be floating. The travel aspect itself is pretty inauthentic, from what I have heard.

A Mediterranean cruise was one of my best vacations ever- but if it is not for you then don't do it. FWIW I have terrible motion sickness and they prescribed me the patch things that last 3 days, they really worked like a charm and had no groggy after effects like my usual Dramamine for airplanes.

I think the secret is the pick a good company (I did a Royal Caribbean cruise) They have the largest ships (something else that helps with the motion sickness!) and the service was incredible, in my experience that is what made it such a fabulous vacation.

You can have a really good time or a really bad time on a cruise. It all comes down to picking the right cruise line, the right ship, the right time of the year and the right intinerary. On The really big new ships you don't feel much movement, if any at all for most people. If you go out of NY, NJ or Baltimore at the wrong time of the year you may regret it. There are tons of repeat cruisers, many are decades under the age of 60. Plenty of small children, toddlers and infants. It's a great way to travel with extended family and be able to not be with them 24 hrs.

Why would I want to stay in a smaller-than-normal room, take days to get somewhere, eat bad food, and only have access to cheesy entertainment when I could just fly there and stay somewhere nice?

Sounds like my version of hell, but to each his own.

? Being stuck in a cabin with my young children sounds awful!!!!!

Between the rampant norovirus and the environmental damage caused by cruise ships there's no way you'd get me on one either.

A small boat that goes to otherwise inaccessible locations--maybe. But not one of the behemoth Caribbean ones.
