It's bizarre that a country would leave such a huge decision in the hands of a simple majority of fish and chip munchers. I think China has the best model of government at this point in history. All this back and forth with elections and changes of regimes and such is not efficient.

Not pp, but the referendum was a huge blunder by Cameron. There was no reason for it other than political gamesmanship. Now it has become clear that people had by their own admission no clue what they were voting about.

That is not clear at all.

There's a do-over petition to Parliament requesting another referendum that is getting thousands of signatures per minute.

It's funny how the people who don't want to be called "racist" when they support candidates whose entire platform is about building walls and exporting brown people are the same people calling others "elitist" because they bothered to read something about the potential impact of a vote.

Anti-intellectualism is the biggest problem facing democracy. Brexit, Trump -- they're all part of the right-wing's continuing effort to manipulate the uninformed.

Informed does not = you agree with me and whatever BBC and CNN tells me to.

Answering, OP that would be a monumentally stupid move.
People need to calm down and start thinking instead of acting like Chicken Little.

Calling 52% of the voters in the UK referendum "fish and chip munchers" = elitist asshole.
Deporting those who are here illegally is not racist. It's common sense.
Maybe we should turn a blind all to all crime - would that make you happy? We could live out a real-life 'Purge' every day.

Exporting/deporting illegals and migrants is fine with me. Back to from whence they came or anywhere nearby that location [1 day bus trip]. Let France squawk about Calais and send them back.

a million signatures I read. But all coming from London and the areas that voted to remain. Not coming from the areas that voted to leave.
When a significant number of the latter group ask for a do-over, then it might be taken more seriously.

Why would that surprise anyone given that were millions who vote "remain" and who would probably like a redo.

All the banks is London are already packing up already. My sister works there and she is panicking, and thinking about moving asap.

How presumptuous can one be? There are a few people who have expressed regrets and that is viewed as being illustrative of a substantial number of those who voted for Brexit. And just because there is a petition for a redo that has gathered a million signatures also does not mean much given that there were well over ten million who voted against Brexit.

I am sure if the vote had gone against Brexit, a petition to have a redo would also have gathered a ton of signatures.

If there was no reason for the referendum then why did over half the voters vote to leave?

Ironic, isn't it?

Really?

There was a brief rumor running around yesterday that one big bank had started to order 2,000 staff to be immediately transferred, but it was false and denied by the said bank.

Newsflash: Britain is still in the EU! It hasn't withdrawn yet. EU laws still apply.

Jewish voters have a proud history of being progressive and liberal and tolerant (and educated as well). Not saying all are, but as a group they are.

If it's true the majority of British Jews voted to leave the EU it says a lot. To me, at least.

FYI I picked up from the Guardian that the majority of Jewish voters in the UK voted to leave. That's pretty telling.

Telling, in what way?

The type of elitist ass which caused those in Great Britain to vote for leaving the EU.

Someone who lived in Switzerland for several years told me that if Great Britain left the EU,many of the banks in non-EU Switzerland would move to London, making it even more of a financial capital. Boris Johnson, the former mayor of London and now likely PM after Cameron, was very much behind Brexit. The wealthy and educated of London were mostly against Brexit. Why would Johnson support Brexit, if he didn't see an upside for his city and country?

I think a lot more will be revealed after Cameron goes in October.
