What is up with kids in this county?

Anyone tested the water supply for lead like Flint Michigan did?

Well the 2015 blk graduation rate was 81 percent. Not the highest but no where near a travesty

It is toxic stress. You can Google the research on this.

All children enrolling in PGCPS must have 2 blood tests for lead prior to enrollment. If there was widespread lead poisoning, the health department would know about it.

It's pretty bad. Northwestern and Parkdale are lower than 70%. That's low. What are the rest of those kids doing?

At least you know that- that good to know.

I lived in PG county for my entire life up until recently. For the duration of my time there as an adult w/kids I did everything in my power not to send my kids to the schools. I went into to debt to keep them in private school. They went to Holy Family in Hillcrest Heights, and although there was nothing stellar about the curriculum, the controlled disciplined atmosphere is what I found was reason enough to keep them there. When an atmosphere is under control kids will automatically do better because they don't have a bunch of distractions.

Following my divorce last year, my youngest two had to come out of private school and boy oh boy was it a culture shock. My middle sons grades were terrible and he complained constantly about the distractions. At the time he was living with my ex and attending Potomac. My ex is a good dad, but not really hands on when it comes to staying on the kids for projects, homework etc. I feel like the schools coupled with the new home life greatly impacted my sons performance. I live in Montgomery county, so this coming school year he will be living with me. Hopefully the schools on this end are better.

It doesn't take a lot of work and effort to finish high school in US. They may have given the diplomas to the ones who stayed. Come up with the easiest history, geography or math question and I bet the first graduate you ran into doesn't know it.

I'm more curious as to why the complaints are always about "everyone else child". What are ur children doing ? Everybody complains about test scores well that's because " everybody " ain't doing their job.

Sadly, this is true. People don't realize how much better the worse MD public schools are than many of the best public schools in the South or other areas. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't demand school reform, but just put it in perspective. It's like people in the relationship forum that compare their wives' bodies to those of 19 year old porn stars and high fashion models. Your wife can be a size 10 and that's not morbid obesity. Help her get fit if she's not, but don't court an eating disorder. But I digress. The point is that when your PGCPS child gets to a good college, they will be competitive with students of similar SES from less-successful school districts around the country. Maybe they won't get into HYP, but most kids in Bethesda, McLean, Beverly Hills, or Westchester won't go to HYP.

This is hardly true of only PGCPS grads. I work with primarily MCPS grads.

As another teacher stated by kindergarten you are too late. The kids are too far behind and will never catch up

If I ruled the world I would

1. Double down on head start and make sure the staff are actually qualified to teach
2. Don't send kids beyond first grade until they can actully read
3. Strong fair disicipline from day one. If you talk back to the teacher discipline etc

Sadly I think once the kids hit middle school its basically a lost cause

If we implement these steps now by 2025 PGCPS will be respectable
