How to Book Outer Banks for a Weekend this Summer

That 50 or so mile difference, can be negated pretty fast with traffic. So maybe it's a whopping 20-40 closer assuming minimum traffic.

99% all of the homes are rented on a weekly basis.
Chances of finding anything right now is a bit slim. You might find a few cancellation. Or you should look further south. Small hotels might have some weekend options but I highly doubt that.

Obx is 320 miles from the dc area vs 160 miles for OC. There is no way it takes you 50 minutes more to get to OBX even assuming no traffic which is highly unlikely even on a Thursday night.

Maybe you can consider parts of VA beach. You would get more options there.

Agreed that in the US generally beach houses are always going to be weekly in the Summer.

We went for a long weekend once and stayed at the Hampton Inn on the north end of the OBX and it was wonderful.

I agree with you that that poster was speaking out his/her butt. You have to compare Thursday night to Sunday night for both destinations (or whatever the travel days were) before saying "only 50 minutes" longer. No way is OBX only 50 minutes longer during the off travel period.

My boss had a vacation house (for personal use) in OBX. He would leave DC on Thursday around noon, and then leave Kitty Hawk on Sunday night (like 5-6 pm). He said those times were pretty optimal for driving.

The OBX takes forever to get to. At least 6.5 hours if the traffic gods are on your side. You can get to the southern NC beaches as quickly and they are far superior. I say this as a native North Carolinian who has been going to NC beaches for over 40 years.

Personally I would never drive that far for a weekend.

That said, all along the coast there are motels where you can get rooms nightly. Most are pretty rundown but they do the trick.

340 from DC to Hatteras, which is where we go.

219 to Sandbridge, technically the northernmost part of OBX.

Hatters ia the southern most point of the outer banks. Kitty Hawk which is the first part of the outer banks you can get to by land is 255.

NP. No one considers that part of the OBX because it's not really connected to the NC beaches/towns. It's more a part of VA Beach.

6 1/2 hours?

Please - again - when the traffic is on your side (I do this every November), 5 hours to Kitty Hawk. I have got to the NC line in 3 hours multiple times from just inside the beltway.

If you are going to Waves, Duck, etc - add another 45 minutes. Past that, it takes longer.
