What's the most outrageous HOA rules you have encountered?

Chickens, cocks, and pitbulls not allowed.

Our forever home is in a neighborhood with very strict HOA covenants. They actually have people in golf carts driving around measuring the length of your grass.

I love everything about it. I don't have to worry about trashy neighbors, ugly yards, ridiculous paint colors, loud music, boats or RVs, barking dogs, .....

We've received one note in 7 years asking us to paint out mailbox. So we painted it.

Wow, different strokes for different folks I guess because that would drive me bonkers.

Ours prohibits bird feeders but it is never enforced and we all have them.

I wish they'd enforce the trash rules: people are disgusting.

I'd tell them where they can put that ruler.

Soooooo, you want them to enforce some rules, but not the ones you break. Ok, got it

My sisters hoa rules include:
Play sets have to be wooden or plastic
No permanent clothes lines
Trim and front door colors must be pre approved

Moved into a condo where the HOA ordered me to fix the sliding glass doors as a condition of the sale. The glass was fogged (popped seals). I promptly scheduled the replacement with (horrible) Thompson Creek. TC came out and did the replacement.

The HOA then wrote me up for repairing the doors WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. Apparently there was another form to fill out, after I was ordered to do the repair, in which they would have authorized the repair they ordered!

When they wrote me up they ordered me to repair the siding which they claimed TC had damaged (it had always been that way). I asked, "Do I need a permission form to proceed with the repair you are ordering me to make?" Answer: NOPE

If only there could be a rule to prohibit trashy people, that would be the perfect HOA and by itself take care of many other rules.

I hate HOAs. It's for wealthy people with lots of bored, nosy retirees in the neighborhood.

A neighborhood near where I grew up prohibited the parking of trucks and SUVs on the street or in driveways after dark. This was in the 80s and when SUVs became all the rage a decade later, they quickly changed the law.

I was told it is not okay for my dogs to poop in my yard (even when someone cleans it up right away). I told the HOA board that I was pretty sure that wasn't legal (since pets are allowed). I told them I would be happy to see them in court about it.
