Withholding annual fund donation?

You are under no obligation to donate. School can assume what they want but they can't kick you out for that. Only s few people would know anyway, and none will be directly interacting with your child.

Just curious - how much $ do you have to donate to be considered a "strong supporter" or just a "moderate/normal supporter"? We have 2 kids entering a private for the first time next year and after paying full tuition we hadn't budgeted much for an annual fund donation.

This is absolutely false information. You can pledge $1 million and donate $5. You are legally bound to pay the full tuition after June 1 even if you only have $5 in your bank account.

I'd give a dollar so that the school could still boast about a high participation rate.

You can't afford $20 or 50? The school needs to show their families want to be part of the community and help the fund. They are looking for a family % - not a heavy donation. Just mail it in. We are on 70% FA and still contribute $100 each year. Sometimes more if we can.

I hope all of.you who don't donate as a protest have first tried the route of writing a letter. It seems a lot simpler than waiting for somebody to notice your giving habits.

Yes, I've written letters, met with those involved, etc. At a certain point, you just stop giving money to an organization you don't trust to spend it well. My DC wasn't moveable at the time discontent kicked in. And the discontent was over policies and projects that don't directly affect DC, so voice made more sense than exit.

Agree. We too are on 70% FA and plan on donating to the annual fund. We have decided to not donate to organizations we typically donate to and donate it to the annual fund. We also plan to sell items we would typically donate and donate the proceeds to the annual fund. We will get the same tax write off and support a school that we believe in and are proud to be a part of.

You are under no responsibility to donate. Period.
Only a few people actually will know how much you donate, and none of them interact with you or your child regularly.

It's your business whether you do or not donate. Don't let anybody guilt you into it.

A few hundred is fine. Some people do 4 figures. A few do 5 figures. Don't worry about keeping up.

Agree.

So true. Our school is horrible. We are gone. Ghost.

What schools are so horrible?

We could afford just about this and the development office said not to bother.

What?!? Are you serious? Wow, that's pretty insulting. I've never known a charity to down $5 much less $50. Is your school financially sound? Can't possibly be with that type of attitude about a donation? Schools with the biggest endowments are happy to accept whatever you can give. Giving isn't about the amount, it's about saying "I'm committed to what you are doing" so I will give you what I can afford over what I am obligated to give you.
