unless you're interested in 5th grade, where it's %165 higher

it's not clear that the year over year is apples to apples. Of course the SY16-17 is going to be at its peak right now. Is the SY15-16 data from April 15 or is it current? >% 150 difference between years for 5th grade seems highly unlikely

I think it's time for you to wake up and smell the coffee . . . or at least talk to some families of 5th graders. And it's apples to apples - just look at last year's press release.

link?

BASIS went from 18 to 141, Latin from 154 to to 266 . that's 233 spaces right there. That's your statistical difference.

But did other MSs see similar increases?

Cap City, Haynes, DC Prep, Wash Global, DCI?

I'm actually surprised at how poorly distributed this demand for HRCS seems to be. The real demand is ECE which is not that different than DCPS

The increase in demand at 5th and 6th grades is absolutely predicted and logical. It is the wide part of the bubble of all those students who enrolled in PK3 in their neighborhood elementary schools emboldened by the smaller wave of older neighborhood kids who jumped in around 2008/9.

That demand will only grow. What will happen?

Will the charter sector grow to meet the demand?
Will those families who don't get a spot through lottery turn to DCPS at Hardy or Brookland or Ward 6 middle schools?
Will those families go private or suburb?

Stay tuned

There is high demand in middle school charter programs at nearly a dozen charter schools--across the spectrum----

I defined high demand as a wait list in the middle grades >40 students. They are:

EL Haynes
DC Prep-Edgewood
Cap City
Creative Minds
DC Scholars
DCI
KIPP AIM
KIPP KEY
SEED PCS ( 126 on wait list for 6th! )
Two Rivers

we'll go private. You don't fuck around with middle school - very vulnerable age. .

I would jump at a small charter MS like CM or ITS even if the academics are iffy. Socially, the kid needs to be supported. Interesting to wee Doar with such a long waitlist. I'd consider that too - a kid could do worse than a theater arts focus for middleschool. The confidence would carry him through those tough years.

I am much more interested in social-emotional health of middle school ages then academics. S/he can always catch up academically in hs and we can supplement at home

CMI middle school has no waitlist.

And the new Washington Leadership Academy has 99 on their waitlist. I guess this at least means they have their sh*t together on recruitment.

They don't go past 6th, right? That's what N/A means (rather than a zero) for all the schools that don't offer a particular grade, I think. Seems reasonable that families don't want to join a school community for just one year, which happens to be their oldest year.

They are adding MS next school year (grade 6. 0 on WL)

No - they will go through 8th. Next year, they will offer 6th for the first time and then will add a grade each year until they reach 8th. Your kid enrolling in 6th would be the leading edge grade, but would have a path through 8th.
