Fenty's boys -- where are they going?

Sorry for my ignorance, but what school is IIRC? I'd be interested to know what the letters stand for and where it is.

It's an abbreviation for "if I recall correctly."

LOL, I read the PP wrong. Would still be interested if anyone know what school the boys go to.

I think that this is ridiculous! The mayor has the right to send his kids to private schools if he chooses.

Sure he does. He just shouldn't make a huge deal about how he's really going to send them to public school any second now...

Sure he does. But he doesn't have the right to call himself "The Education Mayor" and tinker with and make drastic changes to the public schools and not go along for the ride himself. No way. I hope someone like Tony Williams (a grown up) runs against him in the next election,

And he is also hammering charters in his budget. Nice for him to have options of 'choice' and hammer them for everyone else. No way. No credibility there. And I support public, charters and private. I don't support those who use their political muscle to take away options from others that they enjoy themselves. No way.

I respect the right of elected officials to send their children to private schools, but from a practical leadership perspective, I sure wish Fenty had experienced DCPS as a parent before he'd become mayor. He has no idea how dysfunctional the system is! Obama could have gained insights on education if he'd sent his girls to public in Chicago for that matter.

Of course the mayor has the "right" to send his kids to private. But doesn't mean he should do it. Both Obama and Fenty should get their kids in public school. And if the public schools aren't good enough for them, then they aren't good enough for anybody and they should darn well do what needs to be done to make them as good. And don't say it isn't a federal problem, this city is still controlled in many ways by the federal government - as an example the voucher program (which I don't like, its just an example). This is the reason many of us who would like to remain in DC but can't afford Sidwell have to leave the city. I would love to stay and send my kids there, I'm not rich like the Obama's, I'm a civil servant.

I'd like to send my child to Sidwell, too, but it's not just money, it's getting accepted in the first place. Do you know how many applicants there are per slot? I think it's 15. I believe it's comparable for Maret and GDS, too.

I hope Fenty sends his boys to a public school, as he's pledged he will. I don't think the Obama girls should be in public, it's too intense with the security detail.

The problem is, it wasn't intense before he became president (was a community activist/ Senator) and he STILL sent them to private school. These kinds of choices say a lot about what's good for you, but not for me.

Well, the Obamas sent their girks to a private school that was affiliated with his employer, the University of Chicago, which seems fine with me. At least Michelle went to public schools growing up!

I do not follow your "what's good for you, but not for me" comment."

I don't have a problem with where ANYONE sends their children to school. You have to do what's right for your kids, period. BUT, I do have a problem with Fenty using his kids' education as part of his campaign -- saying his kids will go to DCPS. He should have left them out of it. But since he didn't, he should do what he said.

You first said that the Obama girls would not attend public because the scrutiny was too great. I pointed out that it was not so great in his pre-presidential days that they did not have the option of public prior. Many of the previous posts suggest that it would be good if public officials/policy makers who opine on education (as Obama certainly does) had some direct experience as interested families of children who attend the same schools that are the ONLY option for the vast majority of Americans, public--and now thank god-charters. I am sure it is nice to have your children attend the school of your employer. That would be the logical choice for most people with the option. However, President Obama has spent his entire post-education career as a community activist and major pol in the grooming. It would have been logical for him to choose the public or charter alternative while it was still an alternative for his family--before the heat of the spotlight was too much. As to my "what's good for you, but not for me" comment--Oscar Wilde put it best, in a memorable dining scene in the Picture of Dorian Gray:

"Next to her sat, on her right, Sir Thomas Burdon, a Radical member of Parliament, who followed his leader in public life and in private life
followed the best cooks, dining with the Tories and thinking with the Liberals, in accordance with a wise and well-known rule.
