homework at beauvoir?

Not when my DC was there.

They have a reading journal and are supposed to keep track of what they read . A 20min miniumum was set when DC was there.

In 2nd grade they have them doing a math website .

Pretty much it.

The only "test" at Beauvoir is the practice ERB taken in 2nd grade, the real ERB taken in 3rd, the WISC taken as part of outplacement and the STA test if the child is applying to STA.

no home work.

another reason may be to make sure all work is really the student's . you know, no parent " help".

Welcome!

Another Beauvoir parent who'd like to say welcome! It's a great community. As someone who is in education myself, I believe Beauvoir does the best job of allowing children to be children -- to play and be creative without a lot of rote work and drills. The teachers are great at meeting children where they are and working to help hem build their strengths and address weaknesses. They value social development as much as academic development. The teachers have a great sense of what is developmentally appropriate. Surprisingly, many early childhood and elementary school teachers do not.

We're very happy with Beauvoir, and have absolutely no problems with the lack of homework. As one of the ones posters alluded, the studies show that hours of homework actually does little to advance learning and may actually undermine it.

Having gone from Beauvoir to STA, it is a bit of a rude awakening at STA with the homework. It is indeed correctly "hours" on week days and even on weekends. Lots of it, counts for grades, the school is a machine so we hope like hell they know what they're doing and our kids don't burn out!

Our DS had the "easy" teacher for 4th at STA, so the transition from Beauvoir was about right, with another significant step up at 5th. The boys who had the "hard" teacher definitely had an abrupt transition. (There is a third C Form teacher who is somewhere in between.)

We are a current Beauvoir family, but have had older children matriculate from there as well.
It seems that they are beginning the homework thing a bit earlier now. We do not recall our older child having any (not 20 minutes even) in First Grade. This now occurs, alternating between math and reading.

But even this tiny bit of homework seems to make the teachers uneasy. One email said "If you haven't finished, that's okay! No pressure, no nothing" (something like that)

Thanks! Beauvoir was out first choice and we are really excited to be a part of the community.

What is "C Form?"

For those of you who thought the transition was a bit difficult do you think it helps if the child has some parent provided homework to supplement (not from academic perspective) but from a "get used to doing it" perspective? Like work sheets and reading time?
