I vaguely recall overhearing someone during the welcome recpetion on Tuesday say they start giving homework in the 2nd grade.

Homework starts in first grade. 15 minutes of reading daily, math twice per week, dc's class has a reader's journal where they do two short entries per week. It's not graded, more about good habits and most kids love it. It takes 10 minutes without the reading which we do anyway.

Thanks for the correction. 10 minutes seem very reasonable.

Hardly any homework at Beauvoir. Sounds like a good thing until you graduate on to the next school in 4th grade. Then WHAM! you are hit with the realities of real homework. Can be an adjustment for even the smart kids. They go from footloose and fancy free to hours of homework and grades. Beauvoir should do a better job at preparing their students for life after graduation - especially in 3rd grade.

I'm a Beauvoir parent I wish they didn't have any homework at all. Sure there may be an adjustment but I think the benefits of no homework and free play far outweigh that initial transition period. Brith that being said if we have to have homework Beauvoir does maintains a nice balance

Excuse the numerous I phone typos and no coffee errors

Clearly you don't have a child in 3rd grade at Beauvoir. Our DC is in 3rd grade at Beauvoir and has hw every night. There is 30 minutes of reading a night, math fact practice every night, and then an additional assignment that varies between more math, grammar, writing, spelling etc.

I understand how you feel but I disagree. My child attended Beauvoir and is now at one of the Cathedral schools and getting straight A's. My child was well prepared and I am so glad they had little homework in the younger grades. Studies show there is no advantage to giving lots of homework in the lower grades.

If your 4th grader gets "hours" of homework, the problem is with your 4th grade, not the previous school.

My daughter has a little bit of homework and reading each night. She loves getting it done and is generally finished with it by pickup because ABC center is diligent and organized. It's normally practice on what was covered in class. There is no homework on the weekends and it is nothing to stress over.

Thanks to the current Beauvoir families who posted about what it's really like. As a newly admitted family for PreK we think what has been described here is a perfect balance.
