Please don't let the trigger warning mania spread to adults on anonymous internet forums. Really, OP, you need to stay off the internet and news if you cannot handle what happens in the world. I do not say that to be mean; just realistic. I'm horrified at what's happening with trigger warnings and stifling of free expression and literature on college campuses. |
That would be both over and under inclusive. You'd be shunting a huge amount of non-horrific news shunted into a separate thread that, and leaving a lot of non-news posts that can have horrific subjects, like people dealing with personal tragedies in their families or with their friends, people who are having difficulty processing horrific news stories, and people who just have a terrible dream. |
Or at least DCUM. This is not the place to be if you're feeling sensitive about what you read. There are great forums on Babycenter and other places that are heavily moderated and are good resources for things like PPD. DCUM posters can give out good information, but it's got a rough side as well. I agree the headline is jarring and could have been handled better, but I disagree that all posts need to be created with the needs of someone with PPD or other conditions in mind. |
PLEASE and PLEASE: let's resist and fight this trigger warning mania.
|
Huh? News is a pretty black and white category I think. There are lots of threads that fit this description. They don't all have to be "ten toddlers eaten by lions!" But if they were all grouped into one place and kept out of recent topics that would solve the problem of people posting "Babies made into smoothies!" and sensitive people like me having to think about that for the rest of the day. There are certainly enough threads to justify it. See: Travel, Entertainment, Beauty forums. |
Agree there should be NO trigger warnings. I feel sorry for you PPD mom but maybe just stick to forums that you're interested in instead of using recent topics?
Jeff I'm going to use this moment to again plug the need for a post partum support forum! |
Agree 100%. It's a completely invalid request. This isn't how the real world works -- if you're that fragile, you shouldn't be online, which is a brutal and nasty place. Expecting DCUM or any other similar resource to be a safe space is ridiculous. |
Jeff is on record as against creating new forums. |
+1, from someone who saw Othello tonight. There's a sign outside warning audiences that the play contains haze, gunshots, and murder. |
I'm going to guess you don't work in higher ed. The only people "horrified" about trigger warnings and colleges are Fox news watching arm chair psychologists. It really isn't a pervasive issue. Free speech and expression is still the norm. Relax yourself. |
Removing all news topics from Recent Topics would be ridiculous. A large number of DCUM readers ONLY use Recent Topics and aren't going to seek out a specific forum that is not represented in RT. Plus, news items are posted in a variety of places; entertainment, off topic, politics, several different schools fora, and naturally belong there. |
What's the recent, sad newborn thread? |
Sometimes the thread titles alone will haunt me for days. I didn't know it could be connected to PPD. |
No. This bullshit millennial delicate flower, the world must bend to protect me, thing has to stop. Don't like? Don't look! This isn't a Goatse situation. You have the tools to take care of yourself. |
