It is really obnoxious when people post horrific shit as the subject line of a post. The newborn thing is horrible. Of all the things that get moderated around here, I wish that was on the list.
I hadn't seen that thread when I replied earlier. But, now that I've seen it, let's use it as an example for discussion. Do you think the topic shouldn't be discussed here at all? That it should be discussed, but in a forum similar to the explicit forum that doesn't show up in Recent Topics? Or, that it should be discussed but with a different subject line (and how would such a subject line be composed?)? The problem I always have this type of suggestion is where to draw the line. I don't think that will ever be answered perfectly, but the more I understand about specific examples, maybe the better idea I will have.
I think there should be a News forum that doesn't show up in Recent Topics. And all the news threads should go in there.
That would be both over and under inclusive. You'd be shunting a huge amount of non-horrific news shunted into a separate thread that, and leaving a lot of non-news posts that can have horrific subjects, like people dealing with personal tragedies in their families or with their friends, people who are having difficulty processing horrific news stories, and people who just have a terrible dream.
Huh? News is a pretty black and white category I think. There are lots of threads that fit this description. They don't all have to be "ten toddlers eaten by lions!" But if they were all grouped into one place and kept out of recent topics that would solve the problem of people posting "Babies made into smoothies!" and sensitive people like me having to think about that for the rest of the day. There are certainly enough threads to justify it. See: Travel, Entertainment, Beauty forums.
Jeff is on record as against creating new forums.
