Trigger headlines

Jeff, considering that many people come here for PPD support, please consider guidelines about horror story news postings. Can these have a special news section that doesn't show up in recent topics? Can there be guidelines on what the thread titles can be? For those of us suffering from PPD, seeing headlines about abused or hurt children can send us into a tailspin for days.

Agreed. I'm not even sure why it is here. Horrific things happen, but I'm not sure we all need to dissect them.

It is really obnoxious when people post horrific shit as the subject line of a post. The newborn thing is horrible. Of all the things that get moderated around here, I wish that was on the list.

DCUM does not seem like it would be an appropriate place for PPD support. Just saying. There are probably better resources out there.

Also I don't see why it's not practical to make a separate forum and keep it out of recent topics. It appears you're doing that with the Sex forum.

OP here. I actually found my therapist through DCUM, and got advice on what meds are safest with breastfeeding.

I hadn't seen that thread when I replied earlier. But, now that I've seen it, let's use it as an example for discussion. Do you think the topic shouldn't be discussed here at all? That it should be discussed, but in a forum similar to the explicit forum that doesn't show up in Recent Topics? Or, that it should be discussed but with a different subject line (and how would such a subject line be composed?)?

The problem I always have this type of suggestion is where to draw the line. I don't think that will ever be answered perfectly, but the more I understand about specific examples, maybe the better idea I will have.

That's the easy part. Getting people to use it is the hard part. The line between explicit and non-explicit topics is not always clear, but people generally have a pretty good idea where it is. I don't think anyone agrees about what constitutes a horrific topic.

I would suggest a community norm where people are encouraged to create headlines like "Trigger Warning: News Item with Infant Death" and then give the details in the main post.

People, if a headline like the above appears in a national newspaper, like the Washington Post, it's news and it's out there. It's also fact. Don't click on the post if you don't want to, but please don't restrict others from learning and discussing the issue because you are trying to shelter yourself from the general news.

I say this as someone who has dealt with severe anxiety and PTSD: if you can't handle a headline without a trigger warning, you need to stay off the internet. I do not think anonymous forum websites can or should be the place to enforce moderation of controversial thread titles.

I think there should be a News forum that doesn't show up in Recent Topics. And all the news threads should go in there.
