Tying Shoes

My son is 5, almost 6, and we just haven't had the opportunity because he has velcro shoes. Interesting to learn that shoe manufacturers phase out the velcro at a certain point. That will probably be our catalyst in getting him to learn.

My grandmother worked in a school and saw how many kids struggled at the beginning of K, so she bought wooden blocks shaped like shoes with holes bored. She let us learn to thread the laces through the holes, and she taught us how to tie them. We all knew how to do it before K, because we never wore Velcro. My mother didn't have the time or inclination to worry about that, other things were more important. Now, I still have the blocks, and kids love playing with them, and they learn before K, whether or not they have Velcro or laces.

I remember never having velcro shoes and learning at 4. You couldn't start K if you didn't know. The fact that shoe manufacturers make them for kids up until 2-3rd grade is pretty sad.
