Tying Shoes

At what age do kids typically learn to tie their shoes? At what point does it become necessary? We still use Velcro, and I am not sure we will move away from that any time soon. That being said, I don't want my child to somehow be the only kid in the class who doesn't know how to do it.

My child was 5yrs old. I taught her before kindergarten but only doing laced sneakers or flip flops all summer.

My kid was 5. A creative counselor paired the 5 ye olds up with a big buddy on a rainy day in camp.

My kid learned when he was 10 - he had some OT issues and he just couldn't do it. He wore slip ons and didn't worry about it. Taught it to him when he could do it and now it's fine

It varies from child to child but I can tell you that I notice that non Velcro shoes starts about size 1. When looking for size 1, I didn't find much velcros.

I'd say generally kids without delays learn between 5-7.

One was 5ish and one was 10. The one who didn't unit he was ten has motor integration issues that inhibited his ability to tie shoes at the typical age.

One at 5, one at 8. The second was very resistant, but we told it was time, made him practice for a few days, and that was it.

My kids did not voluntarily want to learn on their own. I finally got rid of the velcro shoes when each was in second grade and then they had to know how to tie a shoe.

Any tips, songs or videos that can be helpful on teaching kids to tie. Especially lefties?

before kindergarten. another little kid showed mine how. it took all of 5 mins.

My lefties learned with the same tricks as righties do. Make a rabbit ear (first loop) , then woth secnd side... the bunny runs around rabbit ear, goes into the hole and pops out on the other side.

My oldest learned at 9, but we were lazy about teaching him. My youngest is 7 and he can't do it, but again---lazy parents.

First version: Make two bunny ears, cross the ears, poke and pull through.

Second version: Make a prairie dog stand up (one bunny ear). Baby prairie dog runs around mom, pops into the hole, pops back up to stand beside mom.

I've found this thread very interesting. So thanks to the OP for posting it!

My son is 5, almost 6, and we just haven't had the opportunity because he has velcro shoes. Interesting to learn that shoe manufacturers phase out the velcro at a certain point. That will probably be our catalyst in getting him to learn.
