| Also, cramming in the knowledge doesn't necessarily set up a good base for further math classes at TJ or elsewhere. |
| Leaving aside the negative comments about taking this course, could some one tell the procedure.. For a reason, it is offered for kids who can handle it and are driven. |
Is the procedure on the FCPS website? If not there, contact the child's math teacher or guidance counselor. I would make sure that the child knows that taking this course means giving up a lot of other opportunities before I would allow my child to do this, no matter how driven the child is. Kids don't always understand in advance the number of hours required for a course like this, and that they may end up with a less firm understanding of the material because of rushing through it by taking it over a few weeks instead of over an entire school year. |
Our MS (which sends a ton of kids to TJ) says it has the opposite effect. TJ has been getting burned by kids who do this, and then end up needing remediation. Then people get upset that 1/3 of the TJ kids need math remediation, and there are newspaper articles about how the TJ admissions process is broken. Our MS TJ admissions liaison says that TJ Reps have asked her to discourage summer school geometry (and 6th grade Algebra II) Counselor also says that 8th grade Algebra II students do not have an edge over 8th grade geometry students. |
| The worst way to learn if you ask me? Cramming 2 semesters into a few weeks does nothing for understanding concepts. |
Here is the procedure. 1. Visit the ENCORE website: http://www.fcps.edu/is/summer/oc.shtml 2. Scroll down and click on Online Campus. 3. A new window will open. Click on Online Courses. 4. Scroll down and click on Geometry Honors. 5. Read the description of SGH0270 Geometry Honors and note registration starts on 05/04/16. 6. On May 4, 2016, return to the site and register for the course. |
