Would you recommend Girl Scout Camps?

If you can afford a day camp like Calleva, at $500 a week, I would definitely look at that.

There's no way Girl Scout day camp at maybe $40 - $150 a week is going to be able to match what Calleva has to offer. Let's be real.

But GS camp is affordable and fun. Girls might not do so much high adventure. The day camps are staffed mostly by volunteers. Girls do singing, arts and crafts, some adventure. GS camp lets a LOT of girls have the fun of camp. NOt just those who can pay $400-$500 a week!

My dd had a great time at a one-week sleepaway camp at Camp Winona last year, and is desperate to do it again this year. And for what it's worth, she also did one week of Calleva and six weeks of Valley Mill. The Girl Scout week was not so high-adventure but she did an archery camp and loved focusing on the one thing. She also had two good friends from Girl Scouts with her.

My daughter just spent three fantastic weeks at Girl Scouts Council of Nation's Capital Camp Camp Winona this summer - I would HIGHLY recommend it. She learned. grew, and gained significant self confidence as a result of these three weeks! It was well worth every penny I spent and in fact, with my work schedule and need to obtain before/after care had she been in a day camp - GS resident camp was a reasonable priced alternative which she LOVED! She is begging to return to Girl Scout resident camp! I heard (from my daughter advocating for me to sign her up) that there are still openings for this summer session in the remainder of July and August.

My DD did a week of sleep away adventure camp with the Girl Scouts two years in a row - caving, rafting, all sorts of stuff.
She came home filthy and happy each time. The Girl Scouts happen to own some gorgeous, breathtaking properties - don't knock what you don't know.

I'd recommend the horse camp and climbing camps too. Wonderful.

A week of gs sleep away camp is more like $300-$600 (for the horse riding).

No you don't.
You get priority registration though.
When your DD is older you can just register as a Girl Scout online for like $12/year (an independent Girl Scout).

I was concerned that based on the cost GS camp would be pretty low quality..but I was very surprised. While it lacks some high end activities my daughter had a wonderful time at Camp Winona and I felt the activities were very creative and interesting to her.
