Would you recommend Girl Scout Camps?

Anonymous
We are considering sending our sweet 7 year old (who is a GS) to a day camp with optional sleepover.
Any comments on these camps or other recommendations?

Yes! Girl Scout camps are great!

My daughter went to day camps for 3 years and now does the sleepaway camps.

Her only objection to the day camps was that it was a pretty long drive there and back each day -- in un- a/c buses. It was always pretty hot all day. The camps do a good job of keeping the girl hydrated though.

I recommend attending with a friend if possible.

I loved them growing up and have no problems sending my daughters - problem is they find them very tame after Calleva - not challenging enough physically. Which as a Girl Scout leader is what drives me insane - everything must be certified, and then certified again.

Highly recommend! DD just singed up for her fourth year of sleep away GS camp. She has been to 3 of the 4 sleep away sites and they have been across the board excellent. Also, an amazing price for the quality (your cookie $$ at work). Agree the it's nice to sign up with a buddy, at least the first time. But lots and lots of girls don't.

My daughters loved them. No friend signup necessary.

Do a girl need to be a Girl Scout to go to Girl Scout camp?

My daughters loved it and go to away camp every summer and so many different camps they do so many different things.

No. As I recall, there's a small ($10?) fee to register as a non-GS attending summer camp.

My daughter has been doing the sleep away camps since she was 6 (started with the mini-camp). She's 14 now and going back for a 2 week session this year. She LOVES them! You don't need to be a girl scout to go to camp, but you have to pay $15 to register as an independent scout. Lots of the camps are full by now, however. Some fill up on the day they open.

wrong. you have to become a registered gs in order to go to camp, but the fee you refer to (actually $15) IS the registration fee to become a GS.

My daughters liked them when they were younger but don't seem to enjoy them as they've gotten older. They don't hold the same adventure or appeal as calleva camps or another sleep away two week camp they attend.

Yes, I found the counselors were great and very enthusiastic. My DD enjoyed the camps when she was younger.

They seem to have a lot of great "adventure" options. Rock climbing, hiking, sailing, orienteering. Did you look into those options?

NP. My generally rule-loving, by-the-book DD was turned off by GS camps' endless rules and regulations which definitely limit any sense of adventure or spontaneity. She much prefers Calleva and even Echo Hill (which she didn't love but appreciated the freedom and laid back atmosphere after going to GS camp).
