+1. Maybe 3 times in the past 10 years, I have eaten something that didn't sit well with me and my body just flat out would not digest it. It will sit in my stomach for hours and not go anywhere and I'm left feeling awful with shivers and the sweats, unable to sleep or anything. Making myself throw up some of the problem food brings some relief and allows me to rest while my body gets over whatever reaction I'm having to what I ate and in the future I'll avoid the problem food. That said, it has NOTHING to do with weight loss and is only related to the fact that I am miserably sick from whatever I ate. |
Yes, it's a "big deal". You are trying to do-over. But in reality, you are setting yourself up in a cycle of doing it over again and again... It also depends on what you consider disgusting. If it's deep fried chinese food follow by bag of potato chips or ice cream- yes it's gross. But if it's dinner at mom's with meat loaf & canned string beans- no, not disgusting (tho not ideal). Either way, you should not throw up. Because what you consider disgusting is subjective. Try to choose healthier foods most of the time and don't over eat anything. Also, if you actually eat really bad foods, you need to remember how it makes you feel so it happens less often. |
I somehow developed a shell fish allergy in my 40s. I ate shrimp and lobster at a friend's party, and immediately got sick. My husband asked me to try my best to throw up. I did, but still landed in the hospital with a banana bag. The doctor said my husband did the right thing, and it could have saved my life. |
Yeah I think it's different for something such as food allergies. I'm allergic to peanuts/tree nuts, and the 2-3 times over the past 5 years that I've accidentally eaten something with peanut oil, it turns my stomach and it's almost impossible for me not to be sick (I hate throwing up, but it causes me even more grief if I don't). Other than food allergies, though, I would say just let it run its course through the digestive system and let it be a lesson learned. |
I've done this a couple of times over the years. I don't have any disordered eating issues, so if something clearly wasn't sitting right, I'd get it out of my system.
If you have any issues with acid reflux, it's probably not a good idea not to do this - take some pepto instead. |
When I do this I walk....and walk. Seriously. It helps move it through much quicker. |
I don't know what you mean by regret, here. Are you talking about spoiled food? Like you ate a bowl of cereal and the milk tasted a little off but you ate it anyway? Or do you mean you overate or ate what you consider to be unhealthy calories? I think the fact that you are asking the question means that the occasions might not be so rare ... |
Two words: Karen Carpenter |
No never.
But in the case of TacoBell, I always regret it later. Gives me the runs. Every time. |
Not normal. Let your body decide. If it's bad enough to make you puke, you'll puke. No need to force the issue. |
How on earth do you do this? If I feel nauseous for any reason, I curl into a ball and pray for it to end. |
Didn't Jerry Seinfeld make it 16 years without throwing up? |
OP didn't say food poisoning. I figured she meant overate, too greasy, very unhealthy. ..something that makes you feel terrible. Of course, if my body wants to comit, I'm going to vomit. How could one question if that's OK. I sometimes feel terrible after I eat too much at a restaurant and yes, I walk. I feel so much better. When the weather is nice, I always try to walk after dinner. It cranks the metabolism up. |
Define disgusting. " I feel ill" is different from "I can't believe I ate so many calories or so much fat." I think it is okay to purge food that is making you feel nauseated, but if you start to find that more and more foods make you nauseated, you have a problem. |
Did you know you would feel this way before ingesting the food? |
