Beauvoir to St. Albans

Having been through this now three times, I know the waiting is no fun. Hang in there! The schools can see how great your boy is!

One thing people fail to factor in when they ask this question about number of Beauvoir boys going to STA:

Saint Albans has a very strong loyalty to the well qualified children of alumni and that boy can be in a Ward 3 DCPS ( not at Beauvoir ). Ditto of a boy's Mom went to NCS. This factor decreases teh available slots every year significantly so don't feel bad if DC gets wait listed.

I don't actually think there's much of a bump for students with a parent who went to NCS. I don't think it's considered an "alumni child" type situation. Maybe a tie-breaker with all other things being equal?

I know it for a fact. As far as I'm concerned that is as it should be, provided the boy is well qualified ( grades, test scores, recs) .

My point in sharing it was not to enter into a debate on the merits of legacy, but rather to point out to the OP, that there very well are less than 10-12 spots " up for grabs" ( thinking she only has to know the number going from Beauvoir)

Some of these families are 4th and 5th generations at the school. Confident enough to sit it out at Mann until 4th grade.

Well, unless you are on the Admissions Committee at St. Albans (and there is a new Director of Admissions this year), I'm not really sure how you could "know it for a fact." I do not think you are correct on this, but I do not have first-hand knowledge either.

LOL. Thinking of all the crazy ass "info" I've heard from parents over the years. I would hesitate to parent conversations of confirmation of any school policy!

But I can't prove you wrong on this, specifically -- and maybe you're right. I agree with you on the point that alumni kids and siblings are part of the mix for non-Beauvoir slots, so basically I am agreeing with your thesis.

I don't know exact numbers but there are a lot of Beauvoir boys going to STA next year because there are ma y qualified candidates that have hoses STA as their first choice - partly because there are many siblings. However, STA always brings in new families though - I would say anywhere from 10-15 non-Beauvoir boys. Good luck!!

Many typos sorry

suit yourself. I was only trying to help the OP not to have the unrealistic expectation that her DS is competing for one of 10-12 spots . It would be a shame for her to feel he got WL or rejected instead of one of those 10 spots , when really do to alumni kids who were well qualified, there were really only 3 spots.

THis is not speculation though . It is fact. How would I know? Well, STA makes an effort to be sure all the parents welcome " new families" in C Form ( the ones who have not been with us since Pre-K at Beauvoir) We have planned social functions and one of the first questions asked is : " what school did DS come from?" There are only 10-12 of these new families in C form. I'd say by the time back to school night rolls around everyone knows each other and that includes knowing if Dad went to STA or MOM went to NCS.

With tuition at the 40K mark, it is not uncommon for STA alumns to send their kids to Mann, Eaton, Sommerset or MOCO or NOVA PS until 4th grade. Really, it is pretty common.

What is Sommerset?

It is an elementary school in Chevy Chase

Beauvoir children only have an advantage if they attend directly from Beauvoir in 4th right? They don't have a spot held to attend later do they?

OP here. Interesting and informative reading. Thank you all. I am optimistic that my son will be offered one of the seats. Long shot for a non legacy, non sibling, non faculty, but we are hopeful. STA isn't for every boy; we believe it is perfect for our 9 year old. Fingers crossed for March 1.
