Beauvoir to St. Albans

Aren't there also children who are applying from schools other than Beauvoir that are going to sing in the boys chorus? They have preference over a boy that isn't going to sing and doesn't have a connection I am told. It's one of the reasons, other than reduced tuition, that parents want their sons to sing in the choir.

Depends. Leave for a different independent that then does not work out, not so much. Leave because family moves away and then moves back - sure. Need to take a break for financial issues, also fine too. Just manage it well, talk to the schools, explain thought process, etc.

I don't think often. If you left to save money thinking you would have a spot, that's not the case. It you left to spend it on vacations, country clubs, or a bigger house, then I would think definitely not, as the school does not need families with these priorities, as they trickle into the school community.

If you didn't get in for 4th grade and applied for 9th with your grades and activities on par with other candidates you probably get in for upper school. Most don't reapply.

Two separate admissions track (school and choir), the school does not select the boy based on the choir. The choir director told us that he accepted our (public school) son the previous year but the school decided to place him on the wait list. Luckily for my son we reapplied.

I think this response is unecessarilly nasty. PP, occasionally a Beauvoir family will have to leave the school due to job loss or divorce AND job loss and the subsequent re-orientation of priorities in the immediate financial recovery period.

The schools on " the cathedral close" are very much a community, and the requirement to be considered a part of that community is support of the school's mission through volunteering and/ or $$$ donating AND being a pleasant person who shows a long term interest in being part of the community.

The schools on the close do not kick to the curb never to return families who suffer a harsh financial set back for a year or two , then later are financially able to return. Fortunately , difficult things like this don't happen that often, but the school does do what it can to not lose a family who they chose to admit on the merits of the child and the family in the past.

Although it might not be much comfort to folks only focused on 4th grade admissions, a St. Albans graduating class is about 75 - 80, meaning anywhere from 40 - 50 members of the graduating class did not come from Beauvoir.

Choir/choristers may be a bigger factor than usual this year. The novice class of choir applicants is very large, and they seem to be looking to take a larger number of C-Formers than usual this year because the choir is down to so few boys. (Only two C Formers entered last year.) Choir applicants also have to apply and gain admission at STA, but I think if they are qualified they may have a leg up. Which might make for (even) fewer spaces for non-Beauvoir/unhooked kids.

It sounds like you agree with the post because they did not say anything about financial hardships not getting in, but rather the opposite.

STA is not influenced by the needs of the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys.
