We weren't impressed by Kilmer and would not recommend it. |
What is? |
|
Luther Jackson is essentially two school: the AAP program is largely isolated from the gen ed. In the AAP program, the kids are mostly upper middle class, white and asian from Vienna/Oakton/Northern Fairfax and will got to Madison or Oakton HS. The Gen ED feeds to Falls Church, and seems to be and hispanic.
I have not seen any strife there, though. |
Hispanics are a pronounced plurality. School is 7% black. Some gang issues there from what I have read. |
| OP, we chose West Springfield because AAs do well and it's fairly diverse. We've been very happy so far. I did an extensive analysis of all FCPS Schools on diversity and AA test scores. |
West Springfield is not a middle school. Everyone, all schools in Fairfax County are fairly "diverse" if you count diversity as percentage of white people. Time to move on from that definition. |
The fact that parents would not want their AAP kids hanging out with non-AAP kids. Dare I ask why? |
Here are some possible reasons: http://teens.lovetoknow.com/The_Extent_to_which_Peer_Groups_Affect_Academic_Performance |
| Has anyone mentioned Rachel Carson? My son is in elementary but his teacher's daughter attends Carson. Almost 11% of the student body is AA and the principal is also AA. It is Level IV AAP. There are several homes in the area in your target price range, but it is located at the western edge of Fairfax County. I also live near Rocky Run but homes in the Poplar Tree area rarely come on the market so if it's a target area, I suggest you begin your real estate stalking as soon as possible. There was a murder/suicide that rocked the community and even that house sold within a week. |
Pretty obvious, if you ask me. |
JP was a friend of mine. I understand you are trying to make a point about how quickly houses sell in the area, but am a little unsure why it was necessary to say "even that house" when referring to the Parisi home. Perhaps I am being too sensitive due to knowing the family.
Houses in the area do sell very quickly. Even homes that need a tremendous amount of work-- remodeling, new roofs, new appliances, new HVAC, etc.-- sell quickly. |
| OP, we chose Lake Braddock. well performing school |
different poster here. Irving is the middle school feeder for West Springfield. Some AAP center kids also feed in from Lake Braddock. The AA kids in this pyramid tend to be mostly military (mid to field grade officer or higher enlisted) and fed kids. The kids seem to value education and achieve in the same way as other military kids from the same rank/education level or as kids from any other high achieving educated family would. The AA kids I am familiar with have parents in careers where education is important, are solidly middle/upper middle class and do very well in school. I would not say that the AA cohort is particularly large in this pyramid (check out fcps for specifics) but they are all typical for the area, high achieving kids whose families value education just as much as the next family in the area. |

Umm. To the person who said Carson was 11% AA-- not so much. Last year it was 6%. DC goes to Carson, and I am always amazed when I go to the school how few AAs there seem to be (I went to a true majority/ minority MS & HS, so I always notice how different DC's class is from what mine was). Based on looking around, I would have put the percentage even lower. There are 5 teams per grade, and at awards ceremony last year, I counted 2 AA kids on his AAP team of about 110. Of course, it also looked like the school was 75% Asian from looking at his team(it's about 40%). Even the band concert only had a couple AA kids. I'm guessing Asians are over reprinted in AAP and AAs underrepresented, but still. |
