OP, we chose West Springfield because AAs do well and it's fairly diverse. We've been very happy so far. I did an extensive analysis of all FCPS Schools on diversity and AA test scores.
West Springfield is not a middle school. Everyone, all schools in Fairfax County are fairly "diverse" if you count diversity as percentage of white people. Time to move on from that definition.
different poster here. Irving is the middle school feeder for West Springfield. Some AAP center kids also feed in from Lake Braddock. The AA kids in this pyramid tend to be mostly military (mid to field grade officer or higher enlisted) and fed kids. The kids seem to value education and achieve in the same way as other military kids from the same rank/education level or as kids from any other high achieving educated family would. The AA kids I am familiar with have parents in careers where education is important, are solidly middle/upper middle class and do very well in school. I would not say that the AA cohort is particularly large in this pyramid (check out fcps for specifics) but they are all typical for the area, high achieving kids whose families value education just as much as the next family in the area.
