I'm 34 and still haven't. I'm starting to seriously doubt I ever will. If I think about it too much, I have a panic attack or start thinking suicidal thoughts. I feel so worthless.

I can't believe you wrote that. You do realize DC is NOT real life America right ? Plus it's the internet. People lie. ALL THE TIME. Unless you see a check stub, don't believe what you read here. And if what they post is true, hopefully Bernie will throw down some socialism and take half their money for the greater good.

The average American made $44.6K last year

Why?? What industry are you in? Despite claims on dcum about how special they are, the people posting on here to brag about how early they made 100k most likely only made that money due to the industry they chose. If you chose teaching and they chose lobbying, do you really think that makes you worthless?? Also as the PP says - people here love to lie about salaries, investments etc. The top 1% of income in DC is somewhere around 450-500k. Now think about how many people here claim to make that much; do you really think half the 1% folks in DC - or even nationally - have nothing better to do than brag online?

I'm "worthless" PP. It's not just about DC. It's about having failed the expectations of everyone who ever believed in me, including my spouse and myself. It's complicated. It has less to do with comparisons to others and more to do with feeling trapped and powerless and utterly humiliated by the way my life has turned out.

I'm in journalism, by the way, but it's my second career. Before that, I was in PR.

Many PR professionals in the government are GS-14s and 15s. Maybe you should try that

I'm not a veteran, I never finished my bachelors degree for financial reasons, and I don't have an "in" that I'm aware of. That makes my odds somewhere around one in seven billion, right?

Trust me. I'd LOVE to go government.
