Fit and over 40 people: what's your regimen?

Anonymous
41 year old male. I do weight training 4 days a week. I do cardio very rarely, most often on cruise ships because I need to burn a crap ton of calories to off-set the food. I've had injuries due to poor form, or weak stabilizing muscles, or just carelessness. In all cases, I found that it was important to do the exercises that strengthen these important joints so that my main weight training can continue.

So if you find that you are constantly having muscle or tendon pulls type of injuries, focus on improving your form, do the necessary warm ups, and find exercises that strengthen those joints that get injured the most.

Your fitness comes from the recovery, not the workout. Get appropriate rest in various time periods. Rest during the week, every few weeks take a rest week, annually have a cycle that involves training, peaking, and recovery as well.

I'm a 40 year old male cyclist. During training I ride about 8-10 hours a week, varying the intensity during the appropriate times of the year. Rest weeks have about half the work of regular weeks, and within training weeks rest days as needed. Usually only 1 set of back to back workout days per week. And when the season is over there are a few months of downtime and slowly working back to training shape.

I suppose if you just want to burn calories none of that matters, but still you should get rest.

4-5 days a week - heated power yoga (60-75 minutes)
2 days a week - ballet (60 minutes)

Weekends - hiking (2-3 hours) or elliptical machine, weights or a strength/cardio class if I go to the gym.

Meditate daily. I also aim to get a massage twice a month.

Sleep: 8-9 hours

Diet: combo of paleo and vegan

I don't combine them per se. Breakfast and lunch tend to be vegan and paleo for dinner. I eat mostly plant based with a small amount of animal protein (in the evening) and I also eat lentils, beans or quinoa at lunch. No dairy, soy or sugar. Best of both worlds!
