Fat. They were fat.

At one point towards end of the FOL run, all the main characters were overweight and the show was called, "Fats of Life."

Jo wasn't wealthy.

I don't remember thinking Natalie was from a wealthy family. Was she somehow related to the "Dorm mom"? Mrs. Garrett???

Blair was definitely from a privileged family.

Can't remember about Tootie's family status.

Tootie was black and it was the 80's, so obviously she had to have been a scholarship kid, right?

I was a part of a kids' focus group when producers were debating whether to air the show. Fun fact- it was originally called "Garrett's Girls."

I told the interviewer that it was better than Little House on the Prairie (my favorite show at the time) because I didn't want to be rude.

So if you hated FOL, I'm sorry and if you loved it you're welcome!

that doesn't explain frumpy.

OP - I've watched a little and natalie and tootie were really short and didn't carry weight well. jo and blair exspecially looked decent. i think blair or the real life actress may have battled an eating disorder IIRC.

anywho i loved this show growing up and this show did not age well but i love it for that. (i'm the hart to hart poster

I always thought Jo was a lesbian.

Quoting myself as the original poster above...

Clearly Tootie was scholarship! (But I don't think she was. She was just the token black actress.)

I looked up FoL on Wiki and learned that Natalie's dad was "Dr. Green" so she must have been "above average". I couldn't find any reference to Natalie being related to Mrs. G.

They weren't frumpy, that's how we dressed then.

Tootie was not scholarship. Jo was.
Natalie was not related to Mrs. Garrett.
Natalie's dad was a dentist I think.

They all had to live in that room as punishment for some thing they did.

They dressed the way the style was back in the 80s. The 80s were totally frump. I should know, I was a produce of that era. I think it was the pendulum swinging back from the 60s and 70s where girls wore mid drifts and short shorts.

The word was "preppy" not frumpy. But yes, it's a fine line.

Again, they weren't overweight. Lisa Whelchel was 16 when the show started and it went on for 9 years. So she was a 25 year old woman by the time the series ended. We all change with puberty, it's a fact of life.

I think Natalie was the only "fat" one. The others had the big boob syndrome that made them look fat.

Tootie's mom was a lawyer; she wasn't scholarship or poor.
