The classiest people I know treat everyone -- from royalty to counter clerks -- with courtesy, respect and genuine interest.

Not talking about money, religion or politics.
Promptly responding to and reciprocating invitations.
Proper hygiene and dress.

That's true of the middle class, too. Not particular to the wealthy.

Yes but the question was about the upper class

The question is asking for habits that are distinct to the upper class. None of these are distinct to the upper class.

The question asked for habits the upper class "can't help" -- as in, habits that are inbred.

Many middle class people are polite, but you only have to read a few of the classic DCUM "Why do I have to send thank you notes?" threads to know that politeness is not inbred.

I would add: prompt thank you notes, without fail.

Cocktail hour.

At least that's what my upper class parents did and my wealthy BIL and my sister. I don't travel in those circles anymore and I don't drink so I can't comment on today's upperclass. But I think that research still shows that alcohol use is higher among upper income whites than among other groups.

I think you're right. The upper class families I know seem always to have a cocktail in hand!

Would agree with this! My social registry family has the worst food but best cocktails at get togethers. We are a family of drinkers.

All this. Also being gracious when faced with any situation.

One can tell much about one's parents by the amount of grace they show, at every opportunity.

not cursing or having screaming fights in public. I can't believe how much of that I see on certain blocks in DC.
Reading all the time to their kids, starting as infants. To the point of obsession.

Exactly. They don't walk into Neiman's and *demand* this or that. I have seen some real beauties (sarcasm) in there!

The "snifflier than thou" attitude is nonexistent. I have never once seen my successful (in any way) friends sniff at someone else. It is crass and low class. A lot of that around here.

Traditionally upper class (WASPs) have an anti-intellectual mindset, at least in my experience.
