Do 6-7 year old boys wear sun hats?

My son has a wool cowboy hat he wears and his head sweats less than if he wears a bucket hat. He is younger though, not sure if it would be "cool" here. I grew up in the west so it's not weird to me

We put the fear of the burn into our DS at an early age. We go to a condo on the beach 1-2 weeks every summer. Every time we see a burned body we point it out, tell him how painful it is, and tell him how to avoid it. He eagerly wears a full sun suit (long pants, long sleeve shirt, hat at Solumbra http://www.sunprecautions.com/)
It's expensive and as he grows we have to size up so it's comfortable, but it's so much better than creams an lotions, which are toxic and have to be reapplied to be effective.
Yes we look like freaks on the beach but we have never suffered painful burns and we stay out all week long.

After spending hours on the internet, I found this awesome hat. It's lightweight, breathes, is washable, and is very portable (you can scrunch it up when you need do). http://www.sundayafternoons.com/kids-play-hat.html

Our children wore this religiously when they were younger, and nary a sunburn did we have.

Unfortunately, once they hit about 5, both boys and girl seem to develop a resistance to hats. Now, we just load up on lots of sunblock and wear baseball hats (boys) and pretty, frilly hats that provide only limited sun coverage (girl).

+1 This hat is fantastic. I actually got it for myself too!

DS also wears those bucket hats from Children's Place. A baseball cap at the very minimum. He's 8, FWIW.

8y old would never wear a hat. He hates even baseball hats.

09:19 how does that work for pool parties, pool play dates etc? I agree on being sun safe, while not making the child a pariah or laughing stock. The boys wear rash guards, their swim shorts are long anyway, and they get regular sunscreen.

Yep, that is a great hat. My kids wore that one until age 8-10 at school. Then they succumbed to peer pressure and went to baseball caps. I still make them wear these hats when we're at the beach or out for the day in the summer. There is too much melanoma in my family to risk sunburn. These hats are good because they are very lightweight so they can tolerate them in the heat (which is not true for baseball caps).

More parents need to insist on hats. Kids don't have a choice to wear clothes, right?!

My eight year old (2nd grade) wears a hat from Gymboree at the beach, and he wore it during field day at school. My fifth grader will wear a sun hat at the beach, with just us, because I don't give him a choice - sun hat or stay under the umbrella the whole time - but not at the pool with friends or anyplace else.

3rd the Sunday Afternoon hats. Our whole family wears them. Sun protection is a non-negotiable for us.

One of my kids has a Nationals bucket hat that he wears on the beach when he's going to be out in the sun for a long time and a baseball hat isn't enough.

My boys wear ball caps pretty much all the time.

Mine might wear one if I use enough duct tape.

Our school has a "no hat, no play" policy, and they offer sun hats and baseball caps. The vast majority of the kids (including the girls) choose the baseball caps because they stay on better.

My sister told me she had to move to baseball caps for her boys around the age of 6-8.

For my daughter (age 7), she wears a visor at school and also gets sunscreen applied at the nurse's office. We go to an indoor pool. When we are at the beach for a week, she and her 2yo sister wear rash guard shirts and pants (or skirts), 50+ Goddess Garden and/or 30% California Baby, and the chin-strap hats from Coolibar; they have them in light blue, light pink, and white, and they share and swap them out according to which goes best with their outfits on any particular given day.
