I appreciate the fact that Latin is doing a good job with a diverse population. But I'd still like to see more top-flight colleges on this list. |
Where do your kids go to school? |
Thank you - good to know. |
At a public city-wide school, the list of where every student in a HS who went to college should mean nothing for any kid who is capable of going to a Harvard or (gag at this phrase) flagship state school on their own merits. The only reason to be disappointed is snobbery and I'm horrified that someone would think Latin should refrain from publicizing this. |
| I don't know much about the others, but Oberlin is a highly selective college. |
|
This is 22:49. I take back what I said about snobbery. Now that I've given this a bit more thought, I don't think that has to be true.
I do think you seem pretty unaware to have expected anything different, but that's ok. |
That abbreviated list you shared included 'good' colleges. The website list of colleges since the first class graduated includes 'good' colleges. Are you sure you are.content with your child getting into a good college OP? |
| Seriously. Go private already OP. Ridiculous snobbery all around. Congrats Latin and Latin seniors for your hard work and humanity. Please use ***holes like the op as an example of what NOT to become in your lives. |
+100 |
| This list is not an advertisement for the high school. It is a congratulatory note to children who have just competed 12'years of schooling. |
+1 Latin doesn't need to advertise; it already has the longest waiting list of any charter! |
It is a congratulatory note that lists the colleges to which they have been accepted. The kids did great - I'm happy for all of them. But when I look at the list to evaluate Latin, I see three of the USNWR top 50 schools overall (Case Western Reserve, U of Rochester, Penn State), four of the top 50 liberal arts colleges (Barnard, Colby College, Lafayette, Oberlin, Denison), and three of the top 50 public schools (U of Maryland. Rutgers, Vermont) . To me that does not look great - I'd like to see more highly rated schools. But maybe I am missing something. (And yes, I know the USNWR ratings are not the be-all and end-all of lists). |
Go ahead and congratulate yourself for winning the lottery. I did too. Now I want to make sure that winning that lottery equates to success for my child. |
It is clear that the very top students at Latin are getting into the schools you deem acceptable. There is very likely a second sub-set of students that would also be accepted to those schools but choose to go elsewhere due to scholarships, affordability, etc. The average graduate who goes on to college, however, goes to a lower-e sranked school. You know your own child and if they would be an average or above. |
| Anyone who has never had a child go through the admissions process actually has no idea how that process has changed since we all went through it. THis is a bit like someone who doesn't have a toddler commenting on toddler behavior, someone who has never toilet trained a child commenting on toilet training, etc. You have no idea what awaits you all. Come back and say something in a few years when you are thrilled that your kid got into Barnard or Oberlin because you know a couple of bright kids who got in nowhere. |
