No, it's an advertisement. If the admin were only congratulating the students with no co-motive, the admin would've kept it totally in-house. On a members-only password-protected area -- like my child's school does. Or (and my kids don't go there) like the similarly sized Maret and Sidwell do. Still, kudos to the Latin graduating class. It sounds like a solid education and a safe place for a lot of kids who otherwise wouldn't reach the same heights. |
| Ok, its a.congratulations/advertisment : If class sizes of 16, learning Latin/French or Arabic, Yale and Princeton educated teachers who also lead sports and clubs and are just generally nice funny and accessible, a school.so small that 12th graders know and look out for incoming 9th graders, massive cultural and economic diversity, the message that "words matter", a minimal party climate (the kids idea of a good time.is going to the park for Frisbee and watching a movie all night, high learning, writing, reading, math and science engagement/low hw for hw's sake, and ending up in Oberlin as a high average student doesn't sound good there are certainly.other options in town. Oh - its free too, as will be college , at least partially, for many of these kids. |

It's certainly a very solid college record overall. Other schools, like Wilson, are have more of a barbell distribution, which a list of post high school institutions might look like this:
Yale Oberlin U of Michigan U of Maryland .... DC Jail Federal Correctional Facility Western Maryland Virginia State Prison. |
We went to Basis for precisely that reason, and we think we made the right decision in terms of getting into college and for our type of kid. But another poster was right, there has been a HUGE demographic shift in the last few years - when we made the decision the high SES kids at Latin were still peeling off for privates for high school and this was not an economic option for us. The MS DC CAS scores were in the top 3 the last two years - along with Deal and Basis. And the kids are staying. Nevertheless, you might want to read the thread about why Latin dropped from a Tier I to a Tier 2 school because it does NOT say good things about how it handles its most academically advanced kids, or year to year progress of individual kids as opposed to the entire MS........... And a lot of Latin parents are blowing off actual statistics. But the economic composition of the high school and the MS are completely different (the MS is now around 20% FARMS, around where Deal is), the DC CAS scores at the high school are much lower, and as this shift kicks in as long as they get their act together on the advanced kids (which I hope they do, but they failed to acknowledge a 4 year downward trend in their letter of both MGP and declining numbers of kids scoring advanced in the MS), I think and hope you will see college acceptances more like Walls and the top Wilson students who are not so pressured by economics........ |

| The thing is, im not sure where all this worry over the top academic kids at Latin comes from. Those kids end up just fine. Like everyone who had the pre reqs they can take honors and APs, there are SAT and ACT prep, they are taught and given opps to practice writing, speaking, thinking, interviewing. If they are destined for MIT they'll get there..no offense to Latin graduates (including my own kid) - I dont think we've had many yet whose hearts were beating for that. I'm sure they'll.come, and they'll get where they need to. My sense from having been through it is there are a lot of happy kids who ended up in personal reach schools. |
OK. So don't send your kid there. I would love get my kids into a DCPS school that graduates nearly all its students and sends most of them to college. Honestly, if this is what's important to you, you'll likely be happier elsewhere. |
Tell me you don't know the U.S. News rankings by heart. |

Of course I don't. I went and looked them up so I could provide some actual factual information for this thread instead of ridiculous and unprovable banter about how kids at Latin love learning so much and their families cry when they leave. |

"...of ridiculous and unprovable banter about how kids at Latin love learning so much and their families cry when they leave."
Wow. I get that you want statistics/facts, and I have no problem with that. But your snide comment above reveals a great deal about your contemptuous attitude toward people who are happy that that children at Latin love learning. You think that's "ridiculous banter"? |
I forgot what snobs people can be. This thread has reminded me. There are some very smart, and probably pretty nice, people who are terrible snobs when incognito, thinking mainly about how things will look to other snobs, not about their true value |
