Hygiene product recommendations - for tween girl

I took her with me to CVS and we sniffed all the crazy deodorants -- like "vanilla sparkle tropical bliss" -- and she picked out her favorite. Also added dove sensitive face wipes in the bathroom, because they are quick and easy, and a gentle face scrub in the shower.

My tween uses the same soap, shampoo and conditioner she's always used. Tom's deodorant is in her room but she never uses it.

+1 There is no need for your daughters to use anything except good old fashioned soap. You all are going way beyond basic grooming care and perpetuating the myth that a woman's body needs extra special care. It's weird.

check the ingredients on the deodorants.

I recently read a study on how earlier use of antiperspirants is associated with breast cancer later. I don't remember the ingredients implicated but I would look into this before giving kids deodorants/antiperspirants or body spray. Or even soaps that have a lot of additives. When my kids have a little BO I just have them take a shower and wash under their arms with a natural soap. (they're also still only 9 and 11)

I would normally agree with this, but I think that making it fun at the beginning is a way for her to figure out what she likes/doesn't like and to enjoy her body a bit more as she moves into the awkward years.

No. Please read this, for the actual science.

I was impressed by this too. Here is what we use: bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, that crystal deodorant thing, coconut oil. Especially with a child just starting puberty, I would be very wary of products with possible endocrine disruptors that are absorbed through the skin.

Coconut oil is a known and bad comedonegenic (clogged pores). I'd be careful with young kids who don't need any acne stimulants!!!

Known by whom?

In any case, it's not like a ten-year-old entering puberty needs a moisturizer on their face.

Keep it simple. Cetaphil is a great cleanser for sensitive skin. Also get a sunscreen for her face. I like the natural deodorants (v. antiperspirants) like Tom's, Alba, and Jason. Have her pick a body wash and shampoo that she likes the smell of--Whole Foods has a line of products in a variety of scents, or try Burt's Bees or something like that.

I'd make a trip to a drugstore with a good selection and have her help you choose what smells she likes. Keep the number of products to a minimum--if for no other reason than that she's more likely to follow a simple routine than an elaborate one.

Just a note: my daughter was using some tween body wash for a few months and ALWAYS stunk. I thought she had an infection of some sort, until I mentioned it to the nurse at CVS and she strongly encouraged me to get her using Dove body wash. WHAT a difference! Also, using cetaphil on her face and back, also made a huge difference. That and making sure she washes her skin AFTER using hair conditioner.

I can't believe some of the PPs encouraging the use of some of these products. Agree that it's worth checking out ingredients.

Yep, my 12 yr old loves that shit. I was practically giddy the time I found a set of them at Costco.
