| I have had an offer like this - a co-worker whose 10 year old daughter wants experience. I am thinking $5/hour |
| Ask the parent what they think is fair. My son did some cat-sitting and was overpaid, in my opinion. Made me want to switch jobs! |
This. |
| $5 per hour is PLENTY. You will be home- not at all the same as being out of the house. (which puts you in the $10+ range). |
Yep, because they're caring for your children, not serving you coffee. |
| $5 per hour. You need room to increase it as she gets older and takes on responsibilities. Or else ask what she charges, a lot of kids have already decided on a rate. |
| $6 per hour. |
Give me a break. My daughter is 13 and she charges $25 for a 3 hour date night and is thrilled to receive that much. Kids too young to work do not need to make $15/hr. That is insane. Most of my daughter's time babysitting is watching tv/on her iphone as the kids sleep. This isn't preschool. OP, my daughter was a mother's helper at 11 and 12. She was given between $3-5/hr depending on the time and family. She was happy no matter what. If a mom just had a baby, she would do it for free. She loves kids. She doesn't need tons of money. Doesn't matter if it is 1980 or 2015. Young kids are not owed nor need a large amount of money. Most kids did it for free to get referrals and jobs for babysitting when I was a kid. Stop acting like your snowflake deserve high pay. Ridiculous. |
| I have an 11 yr old 6th grader, $5/hour would be fine. |
| We pay the responsible 16 year old 10/hr to watch our 3 and 9 year olds. A 10 year old should get no more than $2-3/hour for playing. |
+1 |
Clearly, you were overpaid. |
Or clearly she is exaggerating! |
| We pay $3/hr for a 12yr old helper last summer. She only watched a 4yr old while I either took care of my infant or cleaned the house. Once she starts babysitting for us, I will pay her $8-10/hr. |
I'm not exaggerating. I remember being paid $5 for the first hour & $3 each additional hour for being a mother's helper at that age. I usually only helped out for an hour or 2 so it wasn't like I was bringing home tons of cash. Perhaps I was overpaid but paying someone, no matter what their age, $2/hour for their time in 2015 is just cheap! FWIW,, I agree with the poster who said $10 for the first hour & $5 each additional hour. I wouldn't necessarily round up for the additional hours, though, if you were already giving her $10 for the first hour. |
