Talk me into...or out of buying a trampoline

| I was double bounced on a trampoline which resulted in the broken elbow and I think the risk of injury on a trampoline is too high to justify getting one. I don't feel the risk of injuries on bikes (bike trails not busy roads) outweigh the benefits gained in exercise and coordination. It was a friends trampoline and this was in Canada. I am not sure I would even want to risk a neighbor being injured on a trampoline in this country. Seems like you would need some incredible insurance to cover non relative injuries. |

Don't do it. Take your kids to an open gym where they take classes already, or sign them up for another class.
It's not that trampolines can't be safe. But the level of supervision on a home trampoline is not the same as that in a gymnastics class, and the temptation to have more than one child bounce at the same time is much higher. |

We have had a trampoline in our back yard since my granddaughter was about 4 yo. She is 15. I have a 5 yo grandson. Neither have ever had a problem with the trampoline. No broken bones, sprains, etc. They love jumping on it. Have the two of them jumped together? Sure have, but not high jumping, my granddaughter knows very light jumping with her brother, otherwise for most part, it is just one at a time. You CAN teach your child boundaries. They know they are NOT allowed on it without supervision
As for the neighbors. We have a 6 ft fence around our yard. Was it a novelty when the neighborhood kids found out we had it? Sure has. Have any of them asked to jump on it? Sure have. Have any of them jumped on it? Only a select few. Have I turned kids away? Yup, because I do not want that responsibility. Have any of the teen kids jumped our fence to come in the yard? No, because they know better. One jumped my fence to get a soccer ball in our yard, he was quickly put in his place and told under no circumstances was he to jump the fence. Hasnt happened since. Not sure what our insurance company would say, we had no reason to call and say hey we are putting a trampoline in our yard. Why if we arent allowing anyone other than our family to jump on it. Far as I am concerned, if someone comes into the yard uninvited that is trespassing. They dont belong there to begin with. |
