ITA. Mom never respected boundaries or permitted Ellie to develop an independent identity so the girl ended up with no sense of self. She's whatever anyone wants her to be at the moment and right now it's a victim. Overlay that with a Catholic upbringing and it's a recipe for disaster.

But he was her mentor for a college class. That in and of itself makes the relationship totally inappropriate, but there was a huge difference in power, maturity, and life experience. So yes, that makes him and asshole and yes, he took advantage of her.

Does that make him a rapist? NO. I think the mother is completely crazy and the daughter has been so manipulated by so many people that she probably doesn't know what the truth is any more. But I don't think he comes out of this smelling like a rose.

He was a mentor but not a professor or responsible for her grade. I do think it was bad judgment since one might infer that the level of the help he might offer her could depend on her willingness to have a sexual relationship. But the mom is the real oddball here. Aren't people in Vienna supposed to be more low-key? She sounds like someone you'd find in Georgetown or the Upper East Side.

Guy has a lot of money, power and connections, including powerful ties to her school. He could affect her ability to get a job in SV if she didn't do what he wanted. And as for the website, the guy has $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, lawyers and PR people all working for him. Her parents probably make decent money but nowhere near tech titan bank.

His tone is respectful and gives me the sense that he is a fine guy. Ellie on the contrary gave glimpses of being emotionally unstable. In a email she goes way over telling him about why she acted crazy with him one day. After reading an email like that I would have run away from her immediately but instead he replied saying I am sorry (for something he didn't do) and that he was going to take care of her.
If there was any abuse in here it wasn't Lonsdale it was the mom. That helicopter mom is CRAZY.
