Too much suicide epidemics, mass murders, abduction murders, lacrosse murders, cops shot in face, mass murdering alumni and dining hall beheadings . |
Md being a richer and more educated state , leans private with Hopkins, Georgetown( donated to DC ) and Loyola . Not to mention USNA. MD institutions are more impactful than VA. If the US had to cut schools, UMD, Hopkins and USNA are more important to the country than all the VA schools. |
The Troll is strong in this one |
Well...let's see how "lucky" you are in getting into one of them! |
Yes, and those things never happen in any other states. ![]() |
That answer - "too many..." was not given by the person posing the statement, just fyi.

Many of us are not that enamoured by the Va public colleges. Various reasons. |
What are the reasons? Why are you being so vague? |
New poster, I'll bite. We currently have a senior who is headed to major in engineering. We looked at Va Tech, Penn State, GA Tech and Purdue. Three are similar wrt their campuses (large, distinct line between town and University, good engineering schools, have established robust co-op programs....) GA was too far south and urban/suburban. He preferred the larger school in a more rural town. He fell in love with Purdue. The tone was very different from the other two. Tech (engineering) seemed way more cut throat than Purdue. Purdue was talking collaboration. That resonated with DC. Don't get me wrong, I love Tech, I am an alumna, but Purdue's presentation and random student testimonials hit it out of the park for my DC. I feel like it is a better fit for him too. |
For engineering or STEM in general , you want a Big 10 school. The CIC and institutional synergy/cooperation /resources and friendly rivalry-respect are unbeatable. |
Interesting you should say that about Big 10. DC is interested in engineering and architecture. The best programs I have seen are at the Big 10 though Stanford has an interesting Engineering/Architecture program (gotta get in first). Engineering programs at the Big 10 schools seen harder to get into than the general programs. |
Same here and put MD public colleges in there too. DC is just not interested in attending any schools in this area. But it's a big world out there with lots to offer. MD and VA schools are not the only games in town. If you can do out of state options, look around. If not, take advantage of in-state tuition. |
Well crap... Of course!! Stanford is one of a handful of schools that are national treasures and unreplacable along with Harvard, Yale , Princeton , MIT , Hopkins, the Naval Academy and West Point. |
You mean irreplaceable? Or damn that autocorrect? Not all top private schools have better engineering programs than Big 10 with MIT being the exception. |
Actually, they don't . Why there is so much nightmare activity in the Va schools I have no idea. I just want to avoid it. |
