Any suggestions for some "fun" food to serve - I will order pizza but would like to have some fun snacks as well (the kids will be here what feels like a long time!). I'm willing to heat/prepare, or buy, and since it is my son's bday I will not be monitoring fat or sugar intake

I'm sorry, but you should monitor fat/sugar intake. Even if you are okay with your son getting fat, you can't be sure everyone else is with their kids getting fat.

What to have:

-Apple
-Oranges
-celery and avocado spread

Yes, because one evening of junk food will cause all guests to gain at least ten lbs.

op here - great ideas, thanks very much! i really like the finger food idea - i may skip ordering pizza entirely and instead make a variety of mini foods, protein heavy like sliders and popcorn chicken, etc. and love the late night root beer float idea. i also really like the popcorn "bar" idea since they'll be watching a movie at some point - dumb question, but i assume i need to melt butter on the popcorn so that the toppings stick, right?

thanks again! since y'all were such help, feel free to suggest any games/activities to fill in empty spaces in the party i was thinking of a group card game like poker that they could play with candy for betting. of course the obligatory video games and a movie.

I personally love melted (real) butter on my popcorn but I now some people don't like it. You could always have some melted and available as an option at the popcorn bar.

OP- this party sounds GREAT. Very simple yet very thoughtful.

One night at a party will not make a kid fat

And then its breakfast the next day, then its dinner that night because, "You let me have eight pieces of pizza and a gallon of ice cream last night" then its the next night, then you have a 200lb 12 year old.

Make home made fruit cups without sugar, portion them one per kid. For dinner have baked chicken with a side of broccoli. Its all about health.

People who give their kids a "break" rarely do it once, they do it once, then that is suddenly all the kid will eat.

I can't even tell if this is mocking or serious.

Even if it is serious, why only one fruit cup per kid?

You can get fat by eating too much healthy food, you know.

Its just that big corporations have made shitty food that people (especially children) are purposely addicted to, so moreboften then not fat kids get fat off of those ratherbthen healthy food.

You can eat carrots only for a few years, and get fat off such a diet, though naturw has made it that you cant get addicted to healthy, natural foods.

Don't invite my kid to your party and yours won't come to mine. Deal?

Obviously your family has a problem with impulse control and the concept of a party or special occasion. However, these days, the families that are concerned about healthy eating don't have that problem and the parents will be able to reinforce those rules again tomorrow and the next day. Most of the families I know with tweener boys don't have a problem with exceptions because their kids are athletic and active and will burn it off. And the kids play at least one sport and will want to be in shape again for the next season lest they get cut.

Let the kids have a real party. Put out some fruit for between courses, and some will munch between handfuls or other stuff, but don't bother putting a lot out and don't have high expectations.

And a kid restricted to an all health-food diet will rebel and sneak treats when mama isn't around. Many a grown woman I know with disordered eating had very controlling parents.

I'm guessing you also complain on the Off Topic board about no one rsvp-ing for your kids' birthday invites?
