Creative Minds - what are the chances?

On the one hand, they're bound to lose students due to the move and the older grades don't get as many applicants so part of me thinks your chances would be good. On the other hand, I would imagine they would also have more applicants for the older grades than in previous years due to the fact they now have a permanent location. I agree with others that you should just rank your schools in true order of preference. If you like CM the best, rank it first. If not, don't.

I think this is also true.

A lot more parents of older elementary have shown interest this year since the permanent location has been announced. However, as it's been said before- with all charter schools - you have good chances with the older grades.

Rank your school in order of preference and GOOD LUCK!

Do you have a sense of what the odds are for 3rd grade?

Last year's 3rd grade waitlist was 14, according to this:

http://www.dcpcsb.org/report/2014-15-available-public-charter-school-seats-and-wait-list

Considering their PK3 waitlist went through at least 20, I would say those are good odds.

I would be shocked if they go through a waitlist of 14 for 3rd grade. If retention is good, they won't have many spots available.

I would disagree especially since CM isn't official thru 8th grade. So even 1 open spot can take calls to 8-9 people before they fill it. Speaking from experience.

Aren't they submitting their middle school application this year?

Yes, they will be submitting the application for the middle school in March.

How so. Are they adding a 1st grade class? Or growing the current one?

I'm not interested in going through the mental exercise to try to explain this, but I will say our family's experience was that we were accepted in CM last year, off the wait list for 2nd grade by April and the first grade spot for the sibling followed probably a month later. So we had been offered spots off the 2nd & 1 st grade wait list for the next year even before the current year ended (and yes, I realize our 1st grader got bumped up because of sibling preference.) If you are willing and able to create a couple choices for your family (whatever that means to you) do not write off CM. Situations change all the time, people move, etc. Personally, every time I read something to the effect of "it would be unlikely those precious spots would be given up at an upper grade given the numbers of family committed....." I laugh.

Anyone know how high they are in the wait list this year for prek3?

Don't get caught up in the hype. All the "hot" charters are not impossible to get in. You have good odds.

PS-8th charter model tends to make it extremely difficult to fill grades even as early as 4th. People start situating themselves into deal/Hardy charters Ana MANY peel off after 4th grade due to Latin and Basis starting at 5th and people like having high school planned out. See Inspired Teaching, I believe they don't have a full 5th and 6th grade class.

Last year I was in the lottery for first and pk3. We were ultimately offered spaces in first at Lee, MV, CMI, and ITS. I can say that after reviewing the stats, although there were fewer spaces available for first, there was less competition for first grade. I did the percentages and it was much harder to get in for Pk3 even though there were more spaces because there were a lot more applicants.

We were in the low 60s in the lottery and never got a call, so below that.

Had a very similar experience for first grade and picked MV.

What do current parents think about math at CMI. The test scores were very low in 2014.

Does anybody know how many PK4 spots are available, if any?

Where did you pick? We're trying to decide whether to put in an application for pk3 and 1st in the upcoming lottery or stick with our current school (where we have sibling preference for the PS3). I figure that if we apply elsewhere our chances of getting are actually reasonable for first as there are so few less applicants.
