| I had this happen. I had a abcess in my throat. Go back to dr |

This was me when I got mono at age 25. I was in horrible pain, but strep test was negative. I started having trouble swallowing and went to the ER. I was admitted to the hospital and was surprised that it was mono.
I also had epiglottitis, an infection and swelling of the epiglottis, the small flap that closes when you swallow and keeps food from going in the windpipe. Tons of pus on my tonsils and they were really enlarged. I had to take a lot of steroids to reduce the swelling. I hope you start to feel better soon, OP. But if it's mono, it's going to take a long time, unfortunately. |

Go back for Test for strep and mono.
Ask Dr. about viscous lidocaine. Nasty, but numbs the throat. |
| thrush? I used to get it when using Advair. |
| I also had epiglottitis and it can be life threatening. It felt like razor blades in my throat. Your throat can swell quickly so get to a dr adapt. I had to take s broad spectrum antibiotic to knock it out. |

The doctor's office finally called back. They're switching me to a different antibiotic. If there is any worsening over the weekend, I'm supposed to go to their urgent care place.
Thanks everyone. Follow up answers to some of these posts: I really hope it's not mono. I'm pretty sure it isn't a sinus infection. I haven't had a cold. We can't retest for strep. The antibiotic I've been taking will cause the test to be negative. |
This was me. I couldn't even swallow my own saliva!! Ended up in ER with IV antibiotics after they(ENT docs) tried to cut through the abcess in my throat. Horrible experience! |

| Isnt mumps back? Maybe it that. Is your neck swollen at all? |
| Could it be Hand Foot and Mouth disease? I had strep last year and then a month later I had something that felt very similar but much more painful when I swallowed....and there is not much you can do for that but rest. And popsicles and soup also helped. |
| OP - did you get the test for mono? Our internist missed in it almost-40-year-old husband. He waited a week. His temperature went to 104. He couldn't swallow water so by the time I got him back to the internist he was so dehydratedd that he had to be hospitalized and an IV put in. Adult mono is really serious. He was out of work an entire summer and much of his hair fell out. |

Pretty sure this is the virus I just got over. I was weeping in pain in the mornings when I woke up and tried to swallow.
My doctor was more responsible than yours and didn't prescribe an antibiotic for it after the strep tests came back negative, though. I think taking an antibiotic when you don't need one is a terrible idea as you really COULD end up with thrush. That would suck. The sore throat went away on its own after an excruciating 8 days. Take anything that helps -- plain old Tylenol worked for me. I am still dealing with some sniffling 2 weeks later! It's a severe virus, that's for sure. |
I am very familiar with HFM and all of its many strains. I work with kids, and have for 20 years. I'm certain it's not that. I have seen a couple of adults with it and it's a terrible virus at any age, especially bad for adults. |
| Can you ask for some steroids? I had an awful sore throat that wasn't strep and didn't get better with antibiotics. No mono. Steroids helped immediately. |
did your doctor test for mono? |
