Colonial Village/Shepherd Park to Deal Commute

We're moving to Colonial Village. The closet walkable Metro is Silver Spring. That's just a fact.

Yes, but--according to my DC-- periodically unsuspecting riders mistakenly get on . I suspect they pretty quickly figure out that they're on the wrong bus.

Ha, I did that once. Never again!

Oh man being the only adult on a bus full of middle school students. Not fun! (Don't worry parents I'm sure your child was the good one it's those other people's kids. Kidding)

Let me tell you, being anywhere near the Tenleytown Metro stop following Wilson HS dismissal is decidedly not fun either. Sometimes it's unruly mayhem. I wish the school did more to supervise the students who go back and forth to the metro.

You mean, in addition to the 2-3 MPD officers stationed every single day after school in the block between Wilson's doors and the east Tenley Metro entrance? It's true sometimes the officers sit on their butts, simply observing.

How many families with kids live in the Colonial Village area, I'm wondering? I know there are lots in Shepherd Park. We're considering the area and wouldn't want to be the lone family with kids in a sea of retired people or people whose kids are in high school/college.

Or they are hanging out at the Best Buy. I usually see so many cops in there, you'd think they were giving away free doughnuts and coffee.

Which side of Colonial Village? South closest to 16th St and Shepherd Pk; North Portal Estates area on the Maryland line; or west side of the Park?

There are definitely kids in the neighborhood but not en masse. Moreover, the kids that are there are spread out between private, inbounds at Shepherd, and OOBs at schools like Eaton and Hearst. To answer your question... your child won't be the lone kid but, you won't see children running up and down the street either. It's a great neighborhood, but you will have to be proactive. When you see families with children, introduce yourself.

We recently moved to Colonial Village with young children. Introduce yourselves to me! We're always looking to meet kids in the neighborhood.

Hmm. Why would they be taking the train from Silver Spring? I assume address cheaters.

Maybe look at a couple of maps and see if you can figure out what the closest Red Line stop to Colonial Village or Shepherd Park is before making that assumption.

Exactly. I live 2 streets from Silver Spring in Colonial Village. The metro is just 3 blocks away.

How old are your kids? I have a 7th grader at Deal (rides the bus) and an 11th grader at DeMatha.

You'll find many playmates at Shepherd playground. We also have a 6 year old in SP. There are four 6 year olds within 6 houses from us.

Agreed. We're new to the neighborhood, and our 4-year-old can always find a neighbor to play with. There are 7 to 8 school-aged kids on our block in SP, ages 4 to 8 (plus two babies).

+1. I could have written the above myself (except kids on my block in SP are slightly younger, with more babies/toddlers).

As for the Colonial Village side, I know a young family who has lived there for several years. They said that they've been surrounded by only older families/retirees until very recently, but that young families have begun moving to their block just in the past year or two. YMMV.

12:47 again. I think we'll end up in Colonial Village, but I'm more than happy to meet you at the playground

10:31 again. FWIW, CV and SP are considered by residents as part of the same neighborhood (which I didn't know until I moved here recently). CV homes tend to be a little bigger, have bigger lots, and a bit quieter with less thru traffic given its location next to Rock Creek Park, but both have similar demographics (although skews a bit older in CV). When I talk to residents about "neighborhood" events, it's pretty much understood that we're talking about Shepherd Park, Colonial Village, and North Portal Estates as one entity. They're all served by the same listserv, community organizations, etc. Each area is more like a subdivision of the larger neighborhood. So no matter what side of 16th the PP ends up on, it's a great area!
