When did Jules become a nickname for Julia?

OP here, I haven't seen it. Has the whole world seen it or something?

It was a very popular movie in the late 90’s. Really a “chick flick” but lots of guys secretly liked it as well.
Well worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

I've heard of it, especially when it was out. I just didn't see it.

If you like romantic comedies, this is a good one IMO. I am not a big movie-watcher, but I have seen this one twice.

I like it, too, but Julia Roberts playing a character nicknamed Jules? Wow, now there is some acting.

Alwyas called my friend Julia "Jules", but she never refers to herself as such or signs her name that way. Kind of like calling a Sally "Sal".

It is British to add an S to the first syllable of a name. Do example, Brits may call Maggie "Mags" or Julia "Jules"

I'm pretty much always Julia, but a friend of mine (who was British) called me Jules back in college in the early 90s.

But they don't say Mels for Melanie; they say Mel.

Sal, Mel, Jules...awful nicknames for beautiful names, in my opinion.

The earliest I heard it was 1981.

My daughter is a Julia. We call her Jules sometimes but she introduces herself as Julia. Didn't know anyone would think that was weird.

My daughter is Julianna but often called Julie - her four year old twin sister recently began calling her Jules.

We think it's cute. But given that my four year old has never seen any of these pop culture references, there must be some inherent "path" to Jules from Julie.

A quick google search shows this Julia from 1921 who used the name "Jules." Apparently it's been around a long time. I'm guessing many people aren't used to hearing it though because "Julia" was of relatively low popularity until pretty recently.

St. Elmos fire comes to mind.

Since I started calling my BFF that in 9th grade in 1984? I still call her that.

FWIW my name's Christina and she's the only one who still calls me Chris. I begrudgingly allow it.

I heard Julius Caesar went by Jules among friends.

Since forever, I think. I was in h.s. in the very early 90s and we all called my friend Julie "Jules." It's just human nature to knock a syllable off of someone's name. Or, strangely, to add one if they have a single-syllable name!
