A boy named Harper-- is it all girl now?

Definitely a girl.

Terrible name. No idea why this one has shot up in popularity.

According to SSN, it was evenly boy and girl name up till 2 years ago. Then some British bloke named his daughter Harper Seven, and it jumped to #16 last year for girl. It's not even a pretty name. Sigh

Makes me think of Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird. So it's a girl name to me, and has been for quite a while.

My sister chose it as a "unisex" name when they did not know the sex of their baby before birth. Her son Harper is now 3, and I really do think of it as a girl's name. Cute kid, but seeing him nearly every day has not changed my initial impression that he is a boy with a girl's name.

A wretched name either way, but sounds like a girl's name.

I'm a guy and I think boy first. Not really a girl's name.

I've never heard of any Harpers besides Harper Lee, Harper Beckham, and a few little girls we know. I've never heard of a boy named Harper, but that said, it does sounds more masculine than feminine to me. I say, go for it! Time to turn the tables on all these parents who are appropriating classic boy's names into girl's names.

It's only "appropriating" if parents of boys think, "Girls use this name, therefore boys can't!" Parents of girls don't think, "Boys use this name, therefore girls can't!" Why the difference?

I've heard it for both. We chose that name for our boy due in December!
