Honestly it depends when you bought your house. If you are first time home buyer with little down you are going to feel poor but if you bought before 2004 and have a low payment you are fine.

If you bought your house before 2004 a salary of median income today would be able to get you a decent North Arlington home.

doesn't change the fact that you can still have a sizable mortgage payment even if you bought before 2004

Shoulda woulda coulda, point is that a 150 HHI doesn't mean you are less wealthy than someone with a 300 HHI if you have lower housing costs.

Family A buys home for 300K has a 1800/month mortgage
Family B buys same home 10 years later for 800k has a 4000/month mortgage

there is no way I would buy an 800k house even if I could - a 4000k mortgage is insane. its a choice and there are perfectly nice homes in our neighborhood for 450k.

Show me a nice home in North Arlington for 450K. You are missing the point, you don't need a large HHI to buy there if you got in before the booms.

Sorry, 300k isn't the same as 150k, regardless of the mortgage. The house is a want. This argument that no one can buy a house after 2004 and live off of less than 400k is just ridiculous. Most likely driven by a few people that feel entitled to live in a very nice house, very close in, and want to live there immediately. They feel they deserve the house without having to save for a down payment. I don't know if it is a lack of understanding of money, delayed gratification, or what, but I have heard far too much poor-mouthing from people who make so much money.

They've moved out of state to North Carolina like everyone from NJ

Not all of us making $200K+ have all of that. We do, and we have none of it.

This is OP. Yes, we do exist, we're called Police officers, firemen, teachers.
