Rich and plain looking in DMV

VERY TRUE.

Yes, I've never seen an attractive person working at the DMV.

A pay grade in the Federal Government. Pay range is 124k-157k. Not rich at all in this area. It's just enough to live a modest life.

They're lazy? We are not exactly rich by the standards of this area, but I could definitely afford nicer/newer clothes, makeup, etc. But why? I'm more comfortable in casual clothes, and I feel like wearing makeup on a daily basis is a waste of time and energy. It's interesting that OP implies that putting a lot of effort into looking good is (or should be) the default.

A modest life would be more what we live in this area, on half that.

Remember, DC is Hollywood for ugly people.

But ugly people with brains!

I guess if you are ugly, you better have brains and money!

Is that a Chantilly thing?

A GS-15 is certainly not considered rich in Loudon County, which also has the highest ratio of twentysomethings making 6 figures.

"A modest life" at a higher income (assuming a one-income household) than the great majority of households in the area. Only on DCUM could a household with an income of $100,000 be the poors.

You think that the GS-15 looks ugly on purpose to make you suffer? Speaking of ego strokes.

That may be true, but it's hardly an income at which $30,000 for a facelift would be an insignificant expense.

+1. I'd rather buy a book than new clothes or makeup.
