Can't she drive? |
Is your corwoker new to DC and from a super small town? It never occured me to not wear jewelry on metro and I ride it all over and live in a transitioning neighborhood. Signed Woman with a 1.5 carat solitiare (big and shiny but definitely not gaudy!!) |
Seriously. It's amazing to me how paranoid and egocentric some people are. 1) Your stuff is not that special or great. 2) The whole world isn't conspiring about how to take it from you. Really, I promise. |
OP again. She's from an NYC suburb and has lived in DC for a long time. To be fair, I didn't get the sense she thought someone would rob her of the ring itself, but rather that it would draw unwanted attention overall. |
| Don't really think about it. I have a 2.5 carat engagement ring. I might turn it around if it was late at night and I was alone, but that's an unlikely scenario anyway. |
| I wear my (non-diamond) engagement ring on the Metro. I don't own any crazy-expensive jewelry, but really, I'd worry more about smartphone and tablets. As someone pointed out, most theft on the Metro is a crime of opportunity--the thief swipes your phone and runs out of the closing doors. I see lots of women wearing engagement rings on the trains--unless it's a big sparkly monster, I wouldn't think that would attract a lot of notice. |
Driving because you're afraid that somebody might steal your diamond ring on the Metro would be even more irrational (in my opinion) than being afraid that somebody might steal your diamond ring on the Metro. |
^^^^ - said the person who hasn't been mugged (yet) and drives instead of taking metro in DC. |
| In virginia you can carry a firearm on the metro to deter the scumbags |
Nope. I've ridden Metro pretty much every work day for the past 15 years. Also used to do regular home visits in neighborhoods that would have most DCUM'ers clutching their pearls. But you're right about one thing - I've never had a bad experience. |
I'm from NY and was definitely careful about flashing my engagement ring on the subway there. I still wore it but tried to keep it inconspicuous depending which line I was riding/time of day. Here I commute on the metro daily and have never given a thought to hiding or removing my ring. |

| Unless I am going to a special event, I don't wear my jewelry partly for safety and partly out of solidarity. I grew up poor just a few blocks from my current ultra-gentrified address. Mere steps away yet an entire world apart. I cannot bring myself to walk around here wearing jewelry valued more than the household income of some of my neighbors. I think it would make me look like an asshole. Safety is still a concern around here so I don't take unnecessary chances but respect for my less privileged neighbors is the main reason. |
| I flip my ring over so the diamond is inside my palm if I'm anywhere sketchy. It's 2+ and pretty noticeable. |
